The fan veneer is Cheesewood, which I got from Rivergum Timbers.

Wow!! - I like it. I think I like it even more for it not being absolutely perfect! :2tsup::2tsup:

Thank you for the kind words RufflyR. Something I haven't attained is 'Pefect', or 'nearly perfect'. or even anything remotely close to 'nearly perfect' :D I am quite happy for a first attempt, and hopefully the next one will be a little more even on the sand shading. However, if I ever want perfect then I'll buy a factory made one, which would quite defeat the object of the exercise... so I'll just be happy with what I can achieve.

I like:2tsup:.

Is the shading done via the hot sand method? If so, did you use tape to keep the sand from the unshaded veneer?

hi bookend.

I used hot sand for the shading, dribbled down the veneer with a long handled spoon, which had the sides quashed in to form a spout. To shield the veneer, I held a steel ruler to the veneer with a pair of pliers. It was used more as a guide for pouring the sand onto the veneer, rather than protection.
