View Full Version : Sydney TWWW - calling for volunteers to man the WWF stand

As you would have seen, the Brisbane crowd has followed the lead of the Melbourne crew in having a Woodworking Forums stand. In Brisbane it was part of the WWF room and was behind the UBeaut stand.

I think it would be good if the Sydney WWF members tried to do the same thing for the June TWWW show. I am prepared to take on the co-ordination role (but maybe not with the same degree of personal involvement in manning the stall that RufflyRustic did in Brisbane).

The first and main thing is to ensure that we will have enough people available to ‘man’ the stall throughout the Show. The Brisbane experience suggested that 3 people on duty at a time was best, so if you are interested, please let me know which days and hours you can help with.

As the show is open for 10am to 5pm each day that means there are 63 hours to cover. I have prepared a spreadsheet with the days and hours marked and I will update the spreadsheet daily to take account of your latest responses and post it each evening.

Look forward to hearing from you – don’t let NSW down when the cane toads and the Vics have already shown that they can do it!:2tsup::D

Come on you gals and guys put your name forward to help.

JMK has started the ball rolling by volunteering to organise it.

You will enjoy the experience and it is a small way to give something back to the Forum

I am happy to do the early run on Saturday, maybe 2 hrs.

Does this fit with the spreadsheet?

I don't want to miss lunch though, i wanna get some extra chilli in Pat's szechuan beef and watch him sweat... :)

I am going to see if I can get a leave pass for the Sunday too. If I do I will do I will man the stand on Sunday too.

Please post the spreadsheet so we can see the windows...

Well, I'm getting suspicious now...:?

That weekend is the weekend of my 40th birthday... I just asked SWMBO if she would mind if I went on the Sunday as well, and she offered to pay for a hotel so I can stay over.... she is after something.:oo:

Anyway, that means I can do some time on the Sunday as well.

Let me know what is the best time to fill, again 2hrs.

All exhibitors are entitled to free entry to the show and as a volunteer to work on the Forums stand, you are also classed as an exhibitor. So.........

ALL VOLUNTEERS GET: FREE ENTRY into the show, with an Exhibitors Pass.

Don't bother asking for an Exhibitor Pass if you aren't prepared to put in time on the stand - less than 1 hour doesn't count, it must be at least a 1 x 1 hour stint preferably 2 hrs or more. Split shifts of 1 hr will be accepted and you can do it the same thing on more than one day if you wish.

It's a definite case of first come, first served as the Exhibitors Passes will only apply until we have a full roster, after that..... Sorry, there is no after that. :o

If you can't volunteer or don't want to help out you can still get a discounted entry via this thread.

AFAIK all that is involved is explaining how the Forums work, showing how to search and so on and, if people want to helping them to sign up. There are presentations in Powerpoint that have already been written and there will also be a show terminal allowing live posting.

Here is the latest roster. It would be really great if we could ahve a few more volunteers to fill in the gaps and to give a helping hand to those that have already volunteered.

We really need a few more volunteers to make this work properly. If we get four or five more, I will be able to redo the timing so the slots overlap (one set starting on the hour and the other on the half-hour), which will make for easier handovers.

Straight off the southern polar ice cap... I think the computer was having trouble too - ice in the the USB sub-system. Keyboard was only responding to its own random selection of keystrokes. Reboot fixed that ;). Didn't fix my fingers though: still jolly cold, and the fan heater isn't cutting much of the ice...

Like some others, I feel inadequately qualified to man the
stand. But I'd like to help, since people on WWF have helped
me in the past many many times. So maybe I could tell others
about those good experiences.

I'll only be at the show on Friday (though not if the weather is
absolutely foul), and I gather that Friday is already well-manned?
But I'll come to the stand first thing Friday morning after I arrive,
and find out then whether I can make myself useful during any slots
later in the day.

Cheers.

Cheers.
How about I put you in for an hour at 11.30 am?

I'd be happy to do Sunday early afternoon if it's not already taken. (I didn't bother looking through all the previous posts
I've put you in for a couple of early arvo slots, Thanks.

I gather that Neil arranges this. I will get back to each of you with the nfo when we have settled the roster, if that's OK

OK, but if the weather is foul, I might not come, so you'd best
mark me down as a "tentative".

Although... hmmm.... my only reason for not attending in foul weather
is that I don't want to wait a long time in the ticket queue. (And I guess
it's a bit late now to get the special advance discount thingy posted to me?)

So I guess we need clarify soon how the special entry thing works?
Does something need to be posted to me, or do I pick up the tickets
at a special place outside the venue without having to wait in a long
queue, or... what?

(I don't really care about paying the $15 -- I just don't want to queue
in the cold rain...)

I have asked for an explanation of that and will get back to you

OK This is how I understand the system has worked in Melbourne and Brisbane.

We will have a small number (say about 5) Exhibitor Passes for the people manning the stand. The first person on the stand each day will have to get them from a central point (say Neil) by phoning him when he (or she) is about to get to the gate. Neil will then come out and give that person the passes and they will go to the stand.

For everyone else during the day, they will ring the person on the stand who will come out to the gate and given them a pass.

When you finish on the stand you will hand in your pass to the others there.

The last person on the stand each day will give the passes back to the central point ready for the next day.

I am wondering whether we ought to invest in a cheap prepaid mobile for people to ring (unless Neil has a spare phone and number he can give us - I would be happy to arrange for such a phone and Neil can take custody of it for this use at each Show).

Here is the pdf of the roster as at 4.30pm today.

There are still some spaces to fill (esp on Sunday 20 June in the morning). Please let me know if you can help out or we will have to miss out running the stand (I'm not sure if we can run it on only the first two days or not - let's really try to get it going for the whole time!!!)

:? Sorry but I can't imagine that working most people are going to be there all day, not just for the start time of their shift.

Maybe a situation of pay the discount entry fee and have it reimbursed when you have done your time at the stand. Just a thought

The passes are only needed to gain entry, once you're in you don't need to wear the pass for the whole day, so if there is 2 manning the stand, those 2 wear the the pass whilst the others can be use for those arriving at different times. That is how we did it at the Melbourne show

I would suggest that all working on the stand (even those who aren't) get themselves one of the Forums ID's and wear it along with forums Cap and or shirt - if you have one.

We have a heap caps for sale on our stand which backs onto the forums stand.

You can get your Forum ID HERE (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f230/)

The ID or cap or forum shirt will also get you into the Forum Lounge and free coffee, tea, companionship, comfy couches and more.

Cheers - Neil :U

I only have a black-and-white laser printer.
Will it matter if I show up with an ID that's not in glorious colour?
(Hmmm. Maybe I can get a colour one printed at the forum stand?)

Doesn't work for almost-extinct species like me who are a mobile-free zone.
But maybe it won't matter since the current weather forecast says:

Thursday Shower or two.
City: Min: 11 Max: 18
West: Min: 7 Max: 17

Friday Fine.
City: Min: 9 Max: 17
West: Min: 7 Max: 17

Saturday Fine.
City: Min: 8 Max: 17
West: Min: 3 Max: 17

So you can add me to the PDF file for Fri 11.30am.
