i have got an old clark wheel loader that needs a ROPS/FOPS canopy put on it.

i am trying to find out what regulations tehre are. i have read

AS 2294.1 Supplement 1—2003
Earth-moving machinery—Protective
structures

but it contradicts itself about 20 times.

there is not a rops/fops avalable for it as its verry old. ancient even.

so i need to make one or get one made.

questions
1. can i make one myself if it complies with all the specification in the standard.
2. can i make one myself and get it certafied by an engeneer
3. can i get one made be an engeneer and fit it.
4. do i have to get one made subject ti to a distructive test then make another.
5 do i have to get it made by a specialist machine shop.

it seams like most things to be a minefield of red tape and web spinning.

Approved ROPS may be available for early model tractors, even as far back as 1945. If these are unavailable
from the manufacturer, a ROPS testing centre may supply an approved frame, or test a home designed frame.

Not sure if it is any help Carl but Neil's of Corowa are a big second-hand machinery dealer that sent Aussie wide.

They carry a lot of tractor parts as well.

Carl, Clarks workshop is at Brecknock Street, Archerfield, opposite my old shed.

A mate of mine had one of his employees roll a truck with a 5.5 t hyundai excavator on it. The cab was buggered, but he built a new one using RHS of about 75x50. I don't know if it's been certified.

Why do you need yours certified?

If You work on the principle of fully welded and bolted direct to chassis with high tensile bolts along with seat belt you ll be fine

I think Carl is turning over a new leaf - no more shoe less milling etc.

I think he's worried about havin every 'T' crossed and 'I' dotted so public liability and insurance isn't a problem down the track - is that right Carl?

nice to have one to keep the dead branches and other widow makers of your head though , not fond of all this regulation , but surely keeps a lot of people employed ,stopping others from getting on with the job . :q

Yep there is a lot of bearocrats sitting behind decks right now developing obesity . diabetes and heart conditions working hard day and night to stop us irresponsible blokes squashing ourselves under trees or machinery . Such self sacrifice can never be rewarded and I bet its a real struggle to get them to take their big fat Govt salaries and perks . :U

Weisyboy,
Unfortunately you are right. You have no option other than getting either the original ROPS or having a ROPS designed and then tested to the appropriate standard. I can dig some details up on the Standard if you wish, I'm almost certain the design or construction requires it to withstand twice the weight of the machinery, but it does not have to be a destructive test and in fact should be a fairly simple design to pass the test. If you need a point in the right direction I can help off line but the people I know probably won't be cheap. Who is the B@#$stard that started suing people, we all should sue him for inconvienience!!

Good Luck

Hi Carl,
the regulations say you must have one for earthmoving gear over 700kg and lets face it loaders are very easy to tip over especially when they have a nice long log on the forks.
A couple of places I know that build them are AT Agora in Sydney and Casey Cab down Victoria but there will also be people in Brisvegas.
Expect to pay $5 to $10k which will make you question whether it might not be better to trade your machine on one that already has a cab fitted.

cheers
Steve

Hey Carl out of curiosity how cheap was that old clark ?

Most of the big construction companys are now specifying that even excavators have to have ROPS & handrails around the engine compartments to work on site, $25 thou + to retrofit per machine. For years OH&S SWMS have specfified ROPS on all farm & earthmoving equipment, but it was never worried about on excavators untill lately a few have rolled over crushing the cabs with some injuries, must be thousands of machines out there working without them fitted.
If your going to start making a machine comply with the regs heres a few things you would need to meet your OH&S obligations, you would need a reversing warning beeper, beacon light, seat belt, daily log book, operators manual, oil spill kit, a spotter if working around other workers & ticketed operators.
