G'day all I'm looking, not even knowing if I want to, get an upgrade lathe, mine is a 30 year old home made that I have had since it was made, haven't used it for 10yrs. Now I'd like to get back into it (small stuff like pens and small bowls) and the old clunker needs a rebuild on the headstock at least. So I would appreciate some comments on these 2 on fleebay if you would. Money is very tight.

Hmmm.. Both are the basic MC900 series.
A new MC900 from H&F is ~$430, a new MC900 for CT is ~$460.

Looking at the 2 fleabay ones CT at $300 and the H&F at $200 and does not look complete either then throw in transport costs especially with the H&F one it comes close to a new lathe.
Since you are only looking at small stuff go for a new mini.
CT - $279
Ledacraft - $264 plus an option for an extension bed to 1000 mm
Both available in Melbourne.

just a passing thought. Also cheaper and new lathe.

Or a Woodfast Midi.

Would have a yarn with Jim out your way at Drysdale.

I would have mentioned that but sounded like the $ was driving the decision a bit more so that was possibly outside the price range.

The midi without variable speed is about the same price as the dearer of the ones you mentioned.

It also has a good top speed for pens,

Thanks all I like the look of the mini's in all those mentioned, but being a stubborn old bastaard I'm giving it another go to get this thing running true in the morning, after I fail, I'll be happy to buy a newy................. Thanks for your help and one way or another I'll be posting pics of my first attempts. BTW I bought stuff off Jim before he started CWS and after, I just went down and bought a starter pen pack ETC the other day but didn't see him. I look forward to catching up again. Again thanks all.

the name is Peter Underwood
But I have been called "undies" since prep................I like it

Undies, good luck and happy turning with the new lathe.
Now all you have to do is go buy some new chisels and other gear just to fully blow the allowed budget :D

Thanks all and Cultana got that covered, a mate gave me a dozen good chisels, some interesting ones included, 1/8" gouge for instance, but some nice units that should have me making lots of sawdust.
