I've been practicing pealing cuts with a skew and managed to get some nice spirals from a piece of Merbau. I'm not saying I've mastered the skew, but it doesn't scare me any more :p.

Nice curlies John, but that is the lightest Merbau I have ever seen.

Thought you'd never ask :whistling2: Pulled this one out of the pile the other night but lost about 300mm of it while I went to get the camera - over 2400mm that I managed to extract before it broke. Came from a peeling cut with the skew to make a spigot on a piece of Strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) all the way from the USA :U

I've got curly envy :cry3:. Was the timber dry or green?

I've got curly envy :cry3:. Was the timber dry or green? Was supposed to have been dry but there was still a bit of moisture there - amazing stuff to turn regardless. Don't get those results with too many of the local timbers here I'm afraid :C

Hey There,

I did my PITH Pen today, from Unknown Goldfields Timber, here are some of the Curlies, and the Pen they come from.
I also have a 20ltr drum full of Poly Resin Curlies but I don't thank that Palstic counts

Thanks for looking,

Spent 6 hours in the shed today roughing out some of the Red Alder and Silky Oak I scored the other day. Didn't go near the grinder once, did it all with my home made Ci1 and my Woodcut Bowl Saver.

I thought this thread was all about long or dainty curlies. If it's also about bulk, here's a few of mine. I'd estimate about 18 garbo bags worth.

That 'pathway' where I get to the lathe and stand to turn is approx 8" deep. My strict workshop rule is to clean up the shavings when I can no longer reach down to the toolrest.....:U
