wombatie 13th August 2010, 05:30 PM Have any of you ever used 1.5 or 2mm ply? If so how was it to cut and did whatever you were making (eg. portraits or whatever) turn out alright or were there too many problems? I have used 2.5 and 3mm ply with no problems but I have been offered this thiner ply and I'm not too sure. Any information will help.

AUSSIE 13th August 2010, 05:53 PM The 3 lots of 3 ply are less than .5mm the second one is less than 1mm and the last one is about 2mm Yes they are all 3 ply not a venear:2tsup:
I cut the .5mm with a sharp exacto hobby knife.The other 2, I cut on the scroll saw or bandsaw with a 3mm mdf backing sheet,to eliminate tearout
Strom 14th August 2010, 03:49 PM These plys (Better known in the industry as bending ply) are commonly used for post forming work (Curved counters reception counters etc etc).
The jig saw with a fine blade has no problem cutting them if you don't have a table saw..

oges 16th August 2010, 08:32 AM I dont think I have cut ply thinner than 3mm, for the thickness you are trying I would stack cut it so that it would help prevent fragile bits breaking. Otherwise you could sandwich it between some waste ply or cardboard for the same reason

keju 19th August 2010, 09:58 PM We recently made a trip to Germany .... found some beautiful ornaments there....made from some wonderful ply wood.... dark wood sandwiched with very light colour....it's a little less then 2mm.... seems very strong.
But I could not locate anything uncut ply like it. I would think it all depends on the quality of the ply.....
I did buy some they sell specially for scrolling, bought it in a shop similar to Bunnings... it looks very white and smooth...... had 4 big sheets ( still wonder what they thought at the airport when they showed up in the suitcase! lol) but what a disappointment when I opened and used them. They only had one good side and splintered like mad....

oges 20th August 2010, 07:56 AM I had a search around and Mister Ply and Wood has aircraft plywood starting at 0.4mm :oo: it says its strong and flexible. Unsure what a sheet of this would cost though.

keju 20th August 2010, 09:02 AM Someone told me a couple of years ago that ply would be around $100 a sheet!!!!!! So I just never even bothered to go check myself.
