My shed extensions

I am slowly getting some shed extensions done, the extension will add another 18m X ~8m onto the existing shed... I hope to eventually close all this portion in and concrete the floor, but that is a long time goal at this point, I have to get the roof finished first...

I started several years ago making the trusses which are my own design and were originally for a stand alone shed, which then I decided to just extend the current shed.

The trusses are 8m long and made out of 2" pipe with 3/4" pipe for the support bars (or whatever they are called). The support bars were supposed to be 1/2" pipe but an planning stuff up made them 3/4.. The trusses should be of very very ample strength. The gable is 10 degrees.

First and second are the trusses. third picture is the bit that gets welded onto the existing shed leg to bolt the truss onto... I have not yet made the leg for the other end.. it will be made out of 3" pipe..

how did you get on getting the trusses passed, I want to extend my car shed and join it on to my carport but the local council reckons they have to be tested before I can put them up, the local steel merchant wants $250 per truss to build them, I can do it for around $90, nice extension by the way, I'm jealous

My licence is a drivers licence but it says open which I assume means I can do anything :D

AFAIK there are no restrictions on what you build where I am as far as anything other then a house goes... In any case they would not care I am not in a town...

Sounds like you need a structural engineer to do all the calculations on the design.

Our new block is getting another shed which will be 18 x 9 m. I included this in the permit for the house and it is basically my own design, but does resemble the shed I bought as a kit back in 2002 when things weren't as exxy. The kit back then was around $7000 and eight years later it has increased to nearly triple that.

Yes the price of steel has increased but that much of an increase is incredible.

My own design is from heavier RHS, has heavier connecting plates and uses high tensile bolts throughout. I drew it up in Autocad and had the calculations done and the council granted the permit. Probably cost me about half of the kit price.

Some of these shed companies make a lot of money out of people's ignorance- on current prices for the same shed they are making $10000 for cutting a few lengths of RHS, welding a few plates to the ends, and ordering the correct number of roof and wall sheets and tophat purlins. Of course this is a little bit more work for me but I don't have to buy the materials all at once and can do things at my own pace.

You can do it yourself and save a packet. It would be worthwhile talking to an engineer- it only cost me $500 for the calculations for a shed this size. And I can use the same design again for shed no.3, and even sell the design myself, or even sell a whole shed kit.

However shed no.3 might receive some opposition from the Minister for War and negotiations have already started :D. Councils can be easier to deal with.....
