What Would you pay for these Lathes ??

a mate is thinking about selling these old lathes and i was wondering what you think they would be worth ??

The herbert 2D was running in a workshop 12 months ago but has been sitting in storage since then .

And these two have been sitting around for a long time they both still move and spin freely but would need a lot of TLC

I saw a lathe like the Herbert, with pegboard control, a wheelbarrow of tooling and some vertical parting tool slide thingy that the seller said was rare on ebay starting at about $300. It didn't get a bid. I cant find the listing sorry. Shipping cost would most likely mean you could only sell it locally.
The other two look much more usable.
As sad as it is, I think its best you work out their scrap value and go from there. It depends how quickly he wants to get rid of them.

I have one similar one, I was told I could have it if I got it out of the shed. I brought it home in a 6x4 old box trailer from 1km away from where I live, boy I got some looks. LOL.
Did he say you could have one for free? They would probably be worth more in scrap than what they would sell for. I would say from $Free-$250 max.
They were designed for repetitious work.

If he does scrap them go over them and grab anything that can use like coolant pumps (might get some money selling them) or any of the cast iron that could be machined into blocks etc for future projects. If you do get some parts I would be interested in the hand wheels if the postage doesn't kill the deal. LOL

Hi Guys ,
Thanks for the helps guys my mate is a Scrap yard owner so he reckons about $600 for the Herbert and a couple of hundred for each of the others , i wish i could afford the Herbert but i cant . I reckon he will scrap them seeing they are worth more as scrap than selling them . The Scrap yard is closing down so they will be gone in a few weeks .

Dave i will see if i can get the Handwheels for you .

Unless I had a production job for it the Herbert is the last one I would take. It seems to have very little carriage travel for the size of the machine. The last one has more travel, a tail stock and taper turning but no lead screw. So that leaves the middle one. But I have no room in my shed :(

god damn it MELBOURNE AGAIN :(( someone in Melbourne wants $1500 for each of his rusty wards and your mate is selling his for $600 if you blocked were up here in Bris i would love to take any of those machines in a heart beat but.. but.. lack of cash restricts my spending right now pitty really i could put those capstans to work they look way better than whats on ebay right now still thanks for posting photos of them its great seeing all the engineering in them

well its good some of it is going to a good home that is a lot of old tooling dar i say junk its just a pitty someday somewhere someone will try and find some clutch or gear that is in that pile and they would have all gone to china and come back as cheap hammers its just sad

interesting he still has those Index automatic screw machines i have never seen one in the flesh or even heard of anyone still running them now did your mate own a production shop?

Herbert's are suited to low accuracy repetitive work like a brass hose nozzle for example, or making some kind of specialised hardware repetitively. I've heard the flat soft iron ways wear rather quickly.

nah my mate has always been a scrappie , but he has a lot of contacts in local businesses so most of the lathes were aquired after the old owners upgraded to new machinery and couldnt get rid of the old ones .My mate couldnt bring himself to scrap them so they have sat in the shed for awhile but now that the business is shutting down they have to go . Hopefully we can find a new home for some of them otherwise they will end up in china . :(

it must have been very tempting for him to just send them to china i mean the capstans may find a new home with appreciative owners but those automatic screw machines are difficult to set up and run i think the old ones need special gear to make the cams used on them and the peg board machines look like you need to know the dark arts to use them

oh i love that drill press if it was rebuilt it could easily find a new home in some factory

I was in visiting this morning and two of the index lathes have been stripped of the motors and any brass , copper or cast aluminium they then went into the bin ready to go to china :( .

I might rescue the drill press myself as the one i have is a cheapo chinese one and i could use a upgrade . :2tsup:
