When is the assignment going to take place. I am anxious to get things started. This is my excuse for getting back to doing pens. I have bowl fever and have been suffering mightily. :o:o:doh:

My fortune cookie said, "Big changes are in your future." I use a midi lathe for everything. Tomorrow I am buying the new Powermatic 3520B lathe. Is that a big enough change? :2tsup::2tsup::2tsup: YIPPEE!!! :U:U:U:U

Just in case some of the Aussies In this swap are not aware ,Australia post has announced a $9 security charge on all Items over 500 grams !

Articles over 500g and all ECI and EPI services will be subject to an additional $9 security surcharge and may face transit delays of up to 48 hours.

Another way to rip us off  I know for me it will restrict any extra goodies along with the Pen !!! John

Big Shed
14th January 2011, 02:53 PM
John, I had forgotten about that:doh:

In fairness to Oz Post I believe the charge originates from the US postal service to pay for extra security checking.

It appears that the US is building an ever higher wall around fortress America.

Sad really, after my last trip over there I would have to have a very good reason to go again, they don't exactly welcome you with open arms and don't even mention the hoops you have to jump through.

Not only are they doing this to us "foreigners" but even their own citizens are subjected to some very invasive screening.

Well my penmaking has had an unexpected disruption, yesterday I severely damaged one of my fingers (as in made it a bit shorter).:-
See details here - http://www.woodworkforums.com/f67/another-short-fingered-forumite-130639/

I had plans of finishing a job at home, then having the rest of the afternoon in the shed to make a start on my swap pen.

I think it a bit unfair on my partner Lazylathe to have to wait until my finger heals enough to get back in the shed, so I might have to go to plan "B".
I have a few half finished pens ( the barrels are turned and finished already) I think I will have to pick the one of these that I am the most happy with, assemble it, and use it as my swap pen. Although it wont be the pen I had in mind, it will be a very nice pen all the same.

My apoligies to Lazylathe. I had a grand design in mind for the swap pen. But cant turn that pen for some time now.:-

Hi Nick,
We set off on the Thurs 5th May, i think we get into Melbourne around 1.30am on the Sunday morning. Looking like we may be there for about 8-9 months now.:D

I doubt mine will make it under 500g, think I will send an extra couple of blanks and not even try. I am collecting some local species and mostly really heavy / dense. The pen has been ready for a week but delays with chainsaw problems and then the weather getting the blanks.

The girl at the post office was telling me she thinks I need to let her know species of timber I am sending, where from & all sorts of other info, did'nt seem too sure of requirements, hopefully get someone more experienced when I send it off on Tuesday.

I would ask her to show you where those requirements are listed. I have sent timber blanks of many varieties, including bark, to the US, Canada, Japan and other places, have never had to do that and have always declared there are timber pen blanks in the parcel.

Thanks for that, I did tell her that many other people were doing the same thing and that no one had mentioned any such requirement. She suggested I google U.S customs and find out, I think she perhaps got a tad confused.

Well my pen is done and as soon as Mrs. Woodpecker lets me know where she wants the little box of joy sent to it will be on the way. :U

I had to make a steel mailing box for the extra goodies. Did you know that beavers chew through cardboard as fast as you can wrap?

The local PO was still going to charge last week so I don't know.

Was in the post office today and was told the $9 surcharge still apllies.
