Hi all was just wondering if people would be interested in having a friendly woodwork and design comp? I've seen in a few other forums that they have usually a quarterly comp making say a clothes rack, end table these sorts of things.

So basically we say what we're going to make and maybe specify dimensions or possibly just go all out.

At the end of the quarter we could have a vote for a winner and runners up and there could be a little prize or something for the lucky ones.

Anyone interested?

Competitions are always fun, in more ways than one. we have held quite a few here, boxes, pallets, turnings etc, etc.

One of the big things is to pick an idea or theme, set the rules, set the dates and go for it.

Did you have anything in particular you were interested in?

G'day rustic. I'm interested in pretty much every aspect of furniture making and most other things. It'd be great to set up a constant flow of little comps going, helps get the creative juices flowing and it's real fun. I was thinking something basic in nature but you could go any way you like on it. Eg a clothes rack, chopping board, end table. But as I said I'm keen to give anything a go.

Hey mate, I'm interested. It might get me motivated to get back into woodworking!

Maybe something small to start with?

a steady stream of competitions is a bit taxing on both moderators/admins and forumites. Let's sort out this one first before we line then up.

So, ideas so far:

1. something useful
2. something small
3. something basic in nature

Any other ideas out there?:)

Something that rocks, as in moves, or as in is totally amazing and splendiforus??

Another idea from a fellow forumite -
something with a secret compartment

maybe another pallet challenge?

I definitely think revisiting a pallet challenge could be in order. I wasn't around for the last one - but have read through the threads and the entrants and I loved the creativity that was sparked by being given somewhat limited materials - rather than limiting the design by stipulating the item (i.e box, table etc). I'd certainly be in for a pallet challenge.

So, a pallet competition. :)

So anything in particular from a pallet, or just anything?

Also raising for comments, should everyone try for a similar pallet, or will any pallet be ok.

thanks
Wendy

Scuse me being dumb, but does pallet mean pallet as in a thingy a forklift picks up?????????

spencer411
18th February 2011, 06:16 PM
thats it cookie, pallet as in forklift thingy.. i think that it should be a specified size, that way everyone has the same amount of timber to create whatever they like. i think we should go for the pallets which are 1000mm x 1000mm i think, maybe a little bigger but yer those ones. What are other peoples thoughts on that?

I also think that it should be and open comp, anything goes.. Turning, furniture, models, toys, boxes anything. Although, when we register we should specify which we are making so they can be judged seperatly.. Thoughts?

As far as additions to the projects go, as in handles, runners etc, i think everything should be made from the pallet, obviously adhesives and fixings are allowed. thoughts?

thanks,

spencer.

I like the 'anything you can make from this pallet' idea - that way the design gland is given its biggest workout. As far as additions - I think we can allow stuff like hinges, magnets etc. Last time there was a pallet comp I think the guideline was that no more than 20% of the project was not from the pallet - I think we could maybe bring that down to 10%?

spencer411
18th February 2011, 08:18 PM
yer 10% is better i think, or maybe we should just allow hinges.. It would also be great if we got some friendly donations for prizes, I have a brand new copy of the woodworkers technique bible that i am happy to give away as a prize, maybe to the wooden spooner:p..i'm currently writing up terms and conditions now, i am using the last pallet compy t&c's as a template for this one, i hope they don't mind.

So, a pallet competition. :)

didn't I get a lifetime ban from ever entering another pallet competition??
(after that unfortunate little episode in the last one??)

I'd imagine one major comp each year would be the best way to go. There would be more buildup and excitement for the comps if they are that bit further apart. Possibly a minor one halfway through the year also to keep the comp addicts at bay :D
Can't say I have many ideas about the comps themselves to offer, but they are a good community building activity and if a few of the sponsors get in on the gig and donate some good stuff as prizes then things can really get underway.

UBeaut.forum Woodwork competition..#2?

Alrighty.. lets go with another pallet challenge...
I'll start with some rules..:aro-r:.and folks can argue for and against....:aro-l:

Rules...
.each competitor has..

1...Raw materials....1 industrial pallet (they vary.. so photo is required) ..
:aro-u:..(find your own)
2...Anything can be made...repeat ...ANYTHING
3... The only addition to the pallet is..Adhesive and surface finish...
4..this is the most argued about rule...so read it again.
5..read rule 4...you want to add hinges?..well..make em out of pallet nails..
6..magnets you say?...well magnetise the nails
7...see above
8...Alrighty...who's in?
we need a start and finish date...
I'll donate one prize ( prizes are nice to recieve and to give and don't have to be epic)
anyone willing to give a prize??.. (a piece of wood? an old tool?(postable)
..A challenge like this is GOOD BIG FUN...and should be attempted by beginners and experienced both.
OK...comments?

Whooaa there or we are going to duplicate effort. :D Spencer and I have been drafting some terms and conditions over the weekend. We are very close to finishing them with just a couple of things for me to sort out. Spencer has also made a start on the prizes.

We've got the start and finish dates sorted and when I get a bit more info, Spencer will be able to post the Terms & Conditions of the 2011 Pallet Challenge, or the Pallet Challenge Mk II or or .... :D

No worries, Underfoot. Keeping the momentum up is great :)

Talking of momentum, I've managed to source a copy of 500 Cabinets as a prize :U so with your offer (thank you) and Spencer's, we are off to a flying start. :2tsup:

Try and push the completion date out a bit to give us busy workaholics a chance to squeeze it in between jobs, I'd love to play.

I've been keeping an eye out for a useable pallet or two. Saw some at the back of Bunnies today - pine, pine, pine, MDF!! :oo: Yep, MDF pallets - don't think I'd be able to make much out of that!

3... The only addition to the pallet is..Adhesive and surface finish...

It shouldn’t be 100% pallet plus finishing. A small percentage should be for mixed medium, glass, tin, stone etc. Maybe up to 20% of the visual surface. Makes the comp more challenging and interesting.

Great rules, but just over 5 weeks from now is way to short. It will probably take most over a week to find a suitable pallet. It would be better if the closing was last day of April. Just my thoughts. :)

Doesn’t really matter with you Claw, by the start of April you will already have made 5 tables,3 bits of Art, maybe a sideboard or 2, and have spare time for this competition:D
