what tafe do you attend?

Hi yall, im just wondering what tafe people attend inorder to study their furniture course. I go to boxhill tafe elgar campus. Teachers there are pretty nice and smart. Facilities are ok but i heard holmesglen is bigger and better. I get to make nice projects then take em home :D makes mum proud.

I did furniture making and wood machining at Holmesglen Chadstone and it was great. The teachers know their stuff and the workshop is second to none. The cafeteria in building 1 is awesome too:p

how many campuses does holmesglen have? at boxhill they got small cnc and apparently 2 edgers! that surprised me considering the size of the place :oo:.

i think they have 3, but chaddy is the one that does most of the trades. they've got a pod and rail CNC, CNC edgebander, beamsaw, 3 spindle moulders (1 is CNC), 3 panel saws (2 are CNC) 4 thicknessers, 4 jointers, 2 overhead routers, a 4-side moulder, 1350mm wide belt sander, morticers, tenoners plus the usual bandsaws and drills. they also have a fully equiped toolroom with a straight knife grinder, universal grinder for rounter and spindle moulder bits plus a profile grinder for the 4-sider cutter heads.

I did several of the woodwork short courses at Chadstone and was satisfied with them. The sharp tools are in dubious shape due to abuse by the apprentices during the day but the instructors with a single exception were interested and quite good. The exception was an affable person who gave me some fundamentally unsound instructions for constructing a cabinet. Also, you could not use the planner, table saw or thicknesser for what I think were safety and insurance reasons. I have since joined a club and have been happy with the change. However, the TAFE was certainly a good place to start.

Just to clarify what Karl has said; 1st year you can't use machines, 2nd year you spend 5 days learning them, after that you can use them as you please.

Im doing furniture design diploma at Marleston TAFE SA. The senior lecturer is Top notch and majority of orther ledcturers and machinists are pretty great too. The mill here is very extensive and facilities are applenty once you've completed the static machines module(s) required to authorise using just about anything.
Good course and tafe if you are more on the creative side and have self motivation.
