Just found this forum when I was searching the net for tables to tell me what drill sizes I needed for a given wood screw gauge.
I'm a rank amatuer when it comes to wood working skills. Last time I ever had any schooling in woodworking was in High school and that was a llooonnnggg time ago. :C

Anyway working on the basis that I know very little I thought I'd start here.
My goals are to be able to achieve an acceptable standard skill of home handy man tasks around the house.

So first I thought I'd ask for recommendations for some reading, a book that covers tools, terminology, proper use of tools, that sort of thing.
Secondly please direct me to the section of these forums that best cater to the questions of beginners.
Lastly any suggestions for shops (Melbourne or outer suburbs) that have more a focus on tools for woodwork as Total Tools where I'd normally go for mechanic type tools does not cover woodworking stuff much and places like Bunnings and Mitre 10 can be a bit hit and miss.

Look forward to your suggestions.

Welcome Mychael! :thyel:

Wood screw info (http://www.sizes.com/tools/wood_screws.htm). Books I can't help you with books, but Carba-Tec (http://www.carbatec.com.au/) is a fairly good tool shop.

Hi

A book I recommend is:

The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing

It is more hand tools than power tools but it has a lot of good suggestions and techniques how to build furniture.

I bought it from Lee Valley

There are also suggested books in this Forum's Library

Welcome to the forum. Enjoy yourself, there is heaps of experience here to draw on and ask away. Check out your local library there should be everything from basic DIY to tradies texts. My advice is read everything. Check out Aust Woodworking mag as well.

Welcome to the forum. Good source of information is on the forum, Just ask a question and you will get plenty of advice.
Library is a good idea but most of the books at our local library are old but some good pointers in them nevertheless.
Good luck.:2tsup:

What are the staff at Carba-Tec like? Are they knowlegable on products? Like most retail places these days I'm sorry to say all the hardware places I've frequented leave you pretty much to your on devices.

I'm not sure if you have a forum dedicated to adhesives, if there is I must have missed it so I hope it's okay to ask here.

What is recommended to use to glue a piece of plate glass onto a bit of particle board?

I've just bought a bit of plate for a level surface and want to stick it onto a piece of board.

Might be best to post this question in this part of the forum.
