I am going to the NZ north island for 2 weeks. Are there any good places to buy a few blanks of NZ timber and are there any restrictions to bring them back into Australia.

Hi I can only suggest the NZ woodturners link here New Zealand A to Z | Woodturning New Zealand (http://www.newzealandatoz.com/index.php/page/display/1028/)

It might give you somewhere to start perhaps by writing or contacting the clubs in the areas you're going to be visiting.

Here's another link which might help you
http://search.nzs.com/nz/Woodturning

I bought quite a few pen blanks of NZ native timbers way back in the 1990s from a shop in Jackson St, Petone I cannot remember the name of the shop or whether it is still there .

The only restrictions to bringing small amounts of timber back in is primarily that it is preferred bark free and of course free of investation.

Cheers:)

Hi,
The shop in Jackson St Petone was The Woodturning Shop. It moved to Paraparaumu, north of Wellington but has since closed down. Jim Lowe was the last owner but I don't know if he is still selling.

If you are in New Zealand around Sunday 15th, the Manawatu Woodworkers Guild has their annual open day and inter club competition in Palmerston North that day. Nine clubs from the lower north island get together. There is usually a lot of wood and turning supplies for sale.

As well as John's links you could try the the National Association of Woodworkers web site. NAW home (http://www.naw.org.nz/index.html) They have a list of club contacts and what is on.

Cheers :)

If your in Auckland go to the South Auckland club its one of if not the biggest in the country.
I met up with some of the guys a while back to buy a few blanks. The major difference is they sell by cubic measure not weight and also NZ is far more humid so be careful with your blanks on returning other wise they open up one of mine did.
