Hey Everyone,

Has anyone turned anything unusual lately?

I have turned this a while ago and thought some of you might like to have a guess at what it is - or what you think it might be useful for (yes, even firewood!).

Amusing comments encouraged and no offence taken!

First one to guess gets the "cigar". Ern (rssr) is not allowed, because he's seen it before.

Cheers,

Lovely piece :)

Is it a whistle, with the left hand knob sliding in and out to vary the pitch?

Ern, you have given away the clue
... I reckon it is a "lip zipper".

Nut Cracker

Give the man a Cigar ......China

Yes its a nut cracker - for pecans and walnuts.

The collar rotates to allow you to insert a pecan or walnut and close it again to prevent bits flying out. There is a piston and anvil inside and the pull rod compresses a spring.

The impact cracks the nut end to end but cannot crush it completely as the piston travel is limited. (so you can't use it as a torture implement!).
The great thing is that the nut generally does not fragment but comes out in two halves or large pieces at worst. Anyone who has cracked pecan nuts knows what I'm talking about.
There are other impact nut cracking contraptions around, that use elastic bands and such.
BTW I used part of a standard door closer and spring inside the handle. The piston is a large bolt , modified which runs through some brass sleeves. It is a prototype and hence a bit hefty.

Thanks for having a look and a guess & here are the rest of the pics. Also thanks Ern, for keeping the lip zipped!

Cheers,

FrankG
