These have been on my to do list for some time. At first I was going to try and make it all out of timber but after looking at some site I think I will line the inside of the tube with a brass tube from a pen kit.
Love to hear from anyone how has made one that works already.

just a thought, model shops also usually stock brass an ally tubing small style for their stuff, planes and trains an what not. probably find sleeveable sizings too.

Can't beat an old metal bike pump :) The cylinder/piston is the easy part. Getting the tinder just right is the hard bit.

I've looking on the net instead of working and found some thing called Charcloth that seems to be good for this.
It is basically 100% cotton cloth turned into charcoal buy cooking it in a tin with a hole in the top until it stops smoking seams very easy I might have a go this weekend.
Just google how to make charcloth and there is a lot of info out there.
It is also good for the flint sticks.

Yes made the char cloth used a coffee can . It's good stuff to play with but put it in a zip lock bag because it stinks . And the smell gets into every thing . I'm thinking of scrounging around the work shop for some bull oak i've got , hard polishes well and looks good finished .:?

I finally got to make some char cloth :2tsup: I used some old drill cotton shorts so i do not know if it 100% cotton or not but it works well.
A friend has a fire piston but it is set up for science demonstration and does not withdraw the amber but we certain got the flash.
Now I need to make the piston:rolleyes::rolleyes:
