I'm tempted to buy one of these. Are there any users of these out there and if so, what is your appraisal of them?

NEW! Donegan Optivisor LX w/Lens #5 NIB | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Donegan-Optivisor-LX-w-Lens-5-NIB-/390254664241?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5adcfd9a31)

BT,
Do you mean that exact one?
I have one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/300453608532 (wlmailhtml:{39BAE3B7-E875-4F82-BDF9-3DD0A594E2BB}mid://00000282/!x-usc:http://cgi.ebay.com/300453608532) (if you look at his other listings just make sure you buy the right one. He seems to have the same thing listed for $109 and people have bought them.)

Comes with four lenses(1.2, 1.8, 2.5, 3.5). You can fit any two to increase the power. At lower powers they seem to work pretty well, as you increase the power you have to hold the page closer and have to go more and more cross eyed to use them with both eyes. By the time you get to 3.5 + 2.5 you can focus on about one word of type at a time, I would assume you would get a head ache fairly quickly if used for any length of time. I can't say how they compare as its so long since I have used a "good" pair.
Strangely Donegan seem to disagree one the lens powers available.

Bob, I saw the one on ebay that sold for $60-something on the weekend and wondered the same thing. I was wondering if it was going to go high.

There are heaps of them on US Ebay. The one I linked to has reasonable shipping. People need to do some homework before they bid .

I got mine from Dick Smith. Has a fixed lens, and an even stronger one that folds down on the inside.

I couldn't do without it, my gogs are just no good for close up work.

Think it was around $30.

I have a selection of single eye loupes that are OK for some stuff but there are times when stereo would be nice. I know Dick and Jaycar sell the visor type. The interest in the Donegan version is that the lenses are optical glass which may suggest better quality than those found in the Chinese look-a-likes. I don't want to pay for a headache. How long do you wear your's for KJ and if you have a headache is it a result of the visor or the Retsina?

BT,
"Optical Acrylic Lens "
If I thought you were talking about glass that's different :)
I wonder if there are two different sorts? (edit. there are, BT you want the OptiVISOR, NOT the OptiVISOR LX)

As far as eye strain goes the optiVisor at 3.5 X is focused? at 4"

Optivisor is equipped with these unique features:

Optical Glass Prismatic Lenses - Ground and polished to precision optical standards - bevel edged and mounted in interchangeable plastic frame.
It Tilts - Adjustable pivots allow the visor to be tilted out of the way when not needed and at your fingertips when you need magnification.
Adjustable Headband - Conforms to fit all head sizes - fabricated from a special blend lightweight material - comfortable when worn for long periods of time.
High Impact Visor - Provides a tough, durable, always new appearance.
Genuine Leather Comfort Band- Padded with orthopedic felt adds to comfort.
Stu, the OptiVISOR LX blurb does not mention what material the lens is made from.

The problem may be the focal length. 8" sounds OK but I won't know until I buy the thing. Additional lenses are quite expensive.

"Optical Acrylic Lens" Comes from the ebay listing.

On Donegans page for the LX, I assume "Lightweight lenses" is their way of saying "not glass" as if they were glass I think that they would say it.

Of course I've been wrong before

I have one of the enclosed models as in post #1, but could never get on with it.

I now use one of these

Brand New 1 LED Light Head Magnifying Glass Magnifier | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brand-New-1-LED-Light-Head-Magnifying-Glass-Magnifier-/140554252842?pt=AU_Jewellery_Boxes_Supplies&hash=item20b9afb22a)

and find it much lighter (discarded the LED and batteries etc), having a choice of diopters and being able to angle the lens to my requirements is a real bonus.
Easy to flip up too.

There are quite a few of these on Ebay at varyoing prices, but I assume they all come out of the same One-Hing-Lo factory:2tsup:

AB,

You ask how long I wear my magnifiers, not long, less than a minute per session, especially if I'm looking for something to leak out of.......

Having just clicked on that link, I'm really confused as to how you're using this item to magnify things... I would have thought it would make your vision a bit.... sh!tty?

I brought one of the cheap chinese ones with multiple lenses off ebay a couple years ago and I found only the smaller magnifications were practical for what I wanted to do.
That was grinding lathe tools.
The larger magnifications meant my nose was literally against the grindstone.

Since then I have brought a optiviser with a low magnification #3 I think, and I am happy with it.
Optical quality lenses make a world of difference.
Great for removing splinters too.
