hello people, any suggestions for a fastidious upholsterer?? I have 2 big old club sofa chairs to completely restore and I want the very best to assist in this restoration. don't mind travelling either way to Gold Coast or up to Sunshine Coast to meet this person. would prefer to have them done in the old fashioned way too.thinking of having them recovered in black suede. danke.:).

I was trained by my Dad in tradional upholstery and am able to do stitched edges and seat springing, etc.

The "old" club lounged from the 30s & 40s were manufactured from old packing crates and whatever timber they could salvage. The stuffin consisted of new coconut fibre and fabric scrap. In the back they used the sweepings from the floors, I used to get old bus tickets and ciggie butts out of them, and that is one of the reasons I dont do upholstery anymore. Oh and the rats in them too, oh and the 2 weeks ork for doing them properly when other upholsterers did them on the cheap in a week.
I dont have a heavy machine anymore for the stitching of the arms and back, but still have a bolt of 18oz hessian and rolls of jute webbing.
If you want to be authentic use blued cut tacks, they used to use 2 sizes, but 16mm are ok. I think I can still get tacks through my work (in a hardware shop)

good luck, and if you need more info let me know

I just looked over my post again.
When I said the used rags, etc in the back, I meaqnt around the back of the seat, the bits you dont sit on.
In the back I think I remember the use of flock......... maybe not..... but maybe
