Hi,

would anyone have a manual in PDF for a recent H&F AL336 lathe, (or Steelmaster SM1236) please?
The only one I have seen is an original, but poorly copied.

Are the Grizzly (USA) 4002/4003 series lathes the nearest equivalent types with manuals online?

I dont have the lathe, just learning the unit, and helping out a friend.

Thanks, mike

Hi Mike,
I think the closest Grizzly lathe to the AL336 is the G9036.
Are you talking about a new lathe? The pictures on the H&F site might be out of date as I think they have change the handles on the gearboxs.

The Steelmaster SM1236 is closer to a H&F AL335.

I have a AL335 copy but the manual isn't up to much.

Hi Stuart,
thanks for that.
My friends lathe was bought new in the last year, and looks exactly like the H&F current photo.
Most USA lathes that I can find on the web (with nice operator manuals available in PDF) seem to have the carriage feed hand-wheel on the left and half-nut lever on the right. The AL336 is the reverse in layout of this.
Otherwise, the spindle speed knobs and power switching buttons on the headstock area, and the general bed and drive layout on the Grizzly 4003 series seems closer to the AL336.

I was just hoping to get an original AL336 manual for browsing.

Seems the AL335 is very close.

Do you have it in PDF that you could post please?

thanks mike

Hi Mike,
The manual that came with mine is almost a waste fo time, but it is a little entertaining to read and try and work out what they mean. I cant put my hands on it just now, I'll dig it out and scan it for you asap. Not sure I can make a pdf? never tried.
The left/right carriage wheel is a English/Americain thing.

Stuart

p.s. Found it, might take awhile as its 80 pages. Some of which don't apply but I'll give you the lot and you can throw out the ones you dont want.

Hi Stuart

need more coffee - I meant also to note that the Grizzly 4003 series and the Al33x series have different feed/thread rate type knobs/levers.
North South cultural thing, like as you say with the carriage layout?.

The beauty of PDF in forum posts is not that is more "secure", but that it combines JPGs etc into one file, which is more likely to be the forum restriction, as long as the PDF size is not too large

I use Irfanview as it suits my budget; it is free.
(Options/Multipage images/...)
A magic program for other things too.

thanks, mike

Still working on it, the scans came out at about 38meg, thought I would try one of the online covertors but its been uploading for about 6 hours now lol. If it doesnt work I know a few people that can make pdfs.

Stuart, are you on a mac? If so anything can make a pdf. Just look for a pdf button at the bottom of your print box and select save as pdf.

88 pages, some scanned better than others. The diagrams that its hard to read the numbers on is the printing not the scanning.

Hi Stuart

ye gods - gee, you have spent a lot of time and effort on that.
Thanks a million for all that.
I have downloaded it all and made a manual up in PDF
Mine is 15 Megs so I cannot post it in one go.
Maybe someone else can PDF it to less than 5.7 Megs.
So no need to PM it, and anyway, my Bigpond guys only allow 10 Megs per email (actually a bit less).

It is perfect - just what I need, and I bet others will appreciate it too.

Thanks again, cheerio, mike
