HI ALL:),
I was looking on the Internet on the Weekend to see if their was any Plans out there for making 5C Collet Chucks. I came across this Plan of a Prototype 5C Collet Chuck. I like his Idea, but Personally on the Male 2" Thread I would try to have the Thread longer. Reason being to give the Female Thread more Support thus increasing the Accuracy of the Device. Has anyone Made a 5C Collet Chuck or 5C Collet Closer ?. Here is some other Weblinks that I came across A Shop-Made 5C Collet Closer (http://www.kinzers.com/don/MachineTools/collet_closer/) ,
COLLET CHUCK (MLA-21) (http://www.statecollegecentral.com/metallathe/MLA21.html) ,
Ty's 5C Collet Chuck Project Page (http://warhammer.mcc.virginia.edu/ty/7x10/5c-chuck.html) ,

I am also interested in any other Weblinks that You may know of.

Hello Stewart,
I made one a few years ago similar to the one sold by H&F with the hollow drawbar (My lathe has a MT5 taper in the spindle) but I had the use of a cylindrical grinder. I have seen the MT5-5C adapters for sale occasionally on Ebay but after being outbid, I decided to make one . If your lathe has a tapered spindle and you can obtain a socket with ID of MT5 you could use it to test the outer taper and make adjustments to the compound angle if necessary ( If you have a taper turning attachment,so much the better ). If your lathe has a threaded spindle nose, maintaining concentricity would be more difficult using Ty's design which appears to have an inherent fault. The rear facing taper on the collet should mate up to a taper on the main section and the collet should slide neatly into the main section (not screw in) . The thread on the collet is only for drawing the collet into the holder with a hollow draw bar. You would not need a locating pin in the holder if you were not using a draw bar.
I hope this makes sense. Russell
