It sounds like a bad earth or even broken earth (black wire usually) or a dicky relay to your cars headlights, do the lights go out when you hit the brake with the high beams on, check that first, maybe a faulty lowbeam relay? hope this helps

To a certain extent what Natural Edge said.

The earth wire on most vehicles and definitely in the power plug to the van is WHITE.

Disconnect the van plug and try the vehicle to see if it does it without the van connected, if it doesn't, follow the next steps.

Check that the connections into the plug and socket are tight and make sure that the EARTH is connected. Some people who wire these in leave it out and rely on the towball connection to maintain an earth. Bad blue.

The connections deteriorate over time with rust being the major one. It pays to put a new plug and socket on in most cases.
