G'day all,
Thought I'd give the Vicmarc a tryout with a platter - I can now turn 500mm inboard :).
Didn't have anything big onhand so out to the dry creek and found a big ugly lump of redgum of about 30kg. By the time I'd finished the platter I was standing on about 50mm higher. The Vicmarc was fantastic with 30 kg of unbalanced redgum whirling around at 150rpm - barely a vibration.
Redgum 410mm, sanded to 1200, Shellawax with bronze powder inlay.
Bruce.

That's a very nice platter, very well finished.
If I look at that piece of found wood, it is surprising that there is such a beautiful platter is made of

Beautiful work

Love the shine, hope it lasts, Redgum eats Shellewax. I've found I have had to refinish a few times over the months before it stops being absorbed, although sealers help.

Plain and simple and plainly simply fantastic. Must be great to have such raw stock just lying around waiting for the artist to find it.

Thanks all,
I'm pretty lucky here - I think I'm the only turner for many miles so I get to pick all the good stuff. Around Broken Hill is devoid of large trees except for river redgum - all the old trees were cut to supply the mines. The good thing is that when they cut the redgums some 100 years ago the stumps were left in the creek bed (Stephens Creek near Silverton) and there is some lovely (and very dry) timber to be had if you don't mind sharing with the termites.

Neil - yep, redgum just sucks up shellawax - this piece I gave it 3 coats/sand of sanding sealer then EEE, that helps.
What works really well on dry redgum is U-Beaut Shellac - seals the timber very well with 2 coats (I polish it on the lathe) then some trad wax. It's a very fast way of finishing.
Bruce.

Beautiful work :2tsup:

Also very jealous of "Didn't have anything big onhand so out to the dry creek and found a big ugly lump of redgum of about 30kg." Love the idea of being able to get out like that, let alone finding such a gem. One of the true wonders of living somewhere beautiful like that :2tsup:

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Guys! :B
Dave, there has to be some positive trade-off for living 6 hrs from a major town - ask me about my postage costs, no big green shed, no carbatec,......... but then - Gidgee, Mulga,
Purple Wood Wattle, Nelia, Bullock Bush, Black Oak, Redgum, Coolibah burl, Mallee burl, Cooba, Wilga.... sorry, what was I grumbling about?

Nice platter and well turned and finished. Must confess, must get a piece of red gum to play with one day. But on the other hand, I have a reasonable choice of timbers up here to play with..
