Wow, fortunately you were not injured. I hope they offered to give you something toward buying another planer.

I've had a similar result on a hard knot with a makita planer ones, it does give a bit of a shock! Same as when you accidently catch the cord in it.

Ouch!

The woodworking group I belong to has a little metal finding wand they make you wave over any reclaimed wood you want to put through the thicknesser to avoid this sort of thing - not sure of cost but could be worth a look to avoid future issues, or maybe a stud finder will work just as well. I've found all sorts of weird metal bits leftover in pallets I've salvaged.

I used to regularly shatter the tungsten inserts, but never have I seen the likes of that. Are you sure your game to try another one?

Ouch

Years ago was renting a house which had a sticking door.
The agent came around and did something similar to his plane.

It was really difficult to show sympathy :p

:o I nicked a latch screw and all I did was destroy the blade. Glad you are able to tell us the story.

After reading the thread "Best Nail Detector in Recycled Timber" guess we can add electric planes.

Hi Bob, bit of a fright there by the looks:oo:....I have a a dead..ish makita that looks to be the same model as yours, it needs a new armature to get it going so if you don't decide to hang it on your wall I could make use of it for parts, I might even hang it on my wall as a reminder of what can happen.

Happend to me as a apprentice hit a peice of 3/8 steel rod that had been embeded in a sheet of particle board, the distributer of the particle board replaced the planer plus the sheet of board

I hope your mate is going to help you out re a new machine - after that sort of hammering I wouldn't trust just a fix - who knows what else has been stressed.

I would also race out and buy a lotto/casket ticket before while you still have lots of luck.
