My first bowl

At the website below are some pictures of my first bowl. It's not real great, thin walled or segmented but I'm pretty happy with how well it turned out anyway.

It's made of Jarrah, comments or suggestions are welcome.

I'd like to do a segmented bowl one day soon with a contrasting thin ring of silky oak around the top and Jarrah at the base.

BTW the lathe I have is a loaner.. but I don't wanna give it back.

G,day Lance,not too bad for a first time effort.
My first time effort wasn't too flash but then neither are a lot of turners!
Things will only get better as you gain confidence in the application of your skills which in turn will become honed the more you apply them preferably with the guidance of an experienced person with the skills!

Lance, as you have probably gathered, these are all compliments......ignore Doorstop, it is obvious he has not got the 'bowls' to pass such comment. (see eunichs in the woodies jokes section)
My only regret is, I am not a woodturner and my lathe is only a status symbol.

When it comes to a "lumpawudwivadentinit" you certainly do have one, and a reasonably good one at that. I am particularly impressed with the understated shine especially being as how it is on jarrah. You get extra points for that.

Keep it up and you could end up on the demo circuit, and one day you may even be good enough to take over from one of the worlds best demonstrator - Primadonna Doorstop. But not for a little while yet. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/wink.gif

Just to be a bit of a nit picker, I think you might find that the tool you used was a spindle gouge not a detail gouge, going by what I can see in the photo.

Neil, I don't know if it's a spindle gouge or a detail gouge. In 'the fundamentals of woodturning' the author (Mike Darlow) refers to a detail gouge, I haven't seen mention of a spindle gouge yet.

Great work. Wish I could get lumps of jarrah in this neck of the woods.
Don't you love the way everyone (well- nearly everyone) on this forum takes the mickey out of each other. It makes my day to read some of the replies and reminds me not to take life too seriously...even the very serious art of woodturning.
