Sheraton Change Gears - curiosity

What is the usual bore for Sheraton change gears?

I see change gears for Sheraton/Hercus/Southbend advertised as though they are interchangeable, but I also see them advertised as having either 5/8 or 9/16 bore. The few that I have for the Sheraton are 5/8 inch, the ones that came with an old and eccentric Southbend here are 9/16.

What is the usual story? What size goes with what models?

Pipeclay is our gear expert and knows all about these lathes and what goes with what, I am sure he will reply once he sees your post.

He doesn't advertise, but he can make pretty much any gear you want if you contact him. From what I have seen, his prices are good for the amount of work and effort he puts into them.

Change gears and no power cross feed - probably a model C if they use the same scheme as Southbend.

You should find that the change gears are a 9/16" bore as earlier mentioned,the reverse tumblers will be 5/8" as well as any compound gears and idler gears.

The compounds and idlers will take a bush with a bore of 7/16".

The compound and idlers are used only on the Banjo bracket,all the other gears will be keyed and used on the stud or screw shaft.

Ahhhh... thank you. Now I see. I am missing the compound gears and have a couple of 80 tooth idlers (well, one has got 80 written on it) and and a stack of keyed 9/16" gears from the SoutBend. When I get to thread cutting I'll need some more (I suspect expensive) gears, but that's a while away yet.

Yes, the Sheraton one certainly does and the bush has to be put in with the flange on the banjo side to make everything line up nicely. I'm not sure about the SouthBend idler, I'll have a look next time I can get some time.
