I've been lurking but I haven't posted anything lately but now that the fly fishing season is mostly over for me it's time for the lathe.

Well I finally finished the Slimline that is for a contest on another forum for the Arthritis Foundation.

This is my onepiece version and the kit is a Black TI Slimline and the blank is a Fusion Blank of undetermined wood from Bellsy on Paradise.ca and four coats of Med CA and polished with either Brasso or Plastx.

I tried to make it to resemble a Euro and because it's harder for a person to hold onto I made a few modifications like the knob on the end to hopefully help someone use this to write with.

The bottom barrel is slightly larger (0.433) around the middle and the knob on the end is the same diameter as the top barrel (0.507) so hopefully it doesn't look out of balance.

Under the lights the camera shows things that are hard to see with the naked eye. Like the part line on the barrel. It is hard to see in the hand but under the lights it looks like a valley between the two pieces.

Well thank you sir ... I dabbled a bit here and there doing pens/reel seats this summer but now I really get to get back to the lathe ...

Better yet, I have a new toy to play with. The neighbor came over last weekend and asked me if I could go with him to pick up a lathe he was given.

Went and installed it in his garage and asked him what we could try on it and he said nothing. I looked in his pile of scraps and found a bandsaw box blank of African Mahogany (I get some really interesting AM from here http://www.stancraftboats.com/) he tossed there and he said it had a flaw so I through it on his new/old lathe.

The neat thing about this is he's so busy making furniture out of win barrels for the local winery's he said I can play with the lathe anytime I want. And the best part is his four car garage (all wood shop) is heated!
