The Show starts today and from what I saw before leaving late yesterday arvo, it looks like it'll be a bottler. Lots of stands were setting up with more still to come in last night.

Heaps of timber lots of tools & demo's every where.

There seems to be a number of new exhibitors I haven't seen before and all looks good for a great show.

Groggy will keep you updated with pics & info throughout the show.

Cheers - Neil :U

This will most likely be the first one I have missed since the shows started, reason is last years poor parking arrangements for the disabled it was too far away from the venue and I was exhausted after pushing the wheel chair from the car park.

The needs for the disabled are not really catered for well so I will leave it for the more able bodied, we just got in the way any way. :(

This is what I found on the EEE web site.

Parking Update
We have been working with the venue to improve parking for the Melbourne Timber & Working With Wood Show. Visitor parking entry will be through Gate 7, off Leonard Crescent, Ascot Vale. Gate 4 will serve as the entry for disabled car parking. The shuttle bus will complete a circuit around both areas to take you to the show entry.

Hey Phil, Liz Falloon recognised that and posted the following in another thread

Hi Everyone
I have been absent from the forum for a while, had a number of shows to organise. Interesting comments above - sales crop up all the time pre show...........but i can gaurantee they don't get to see a 10,000 buyers over 3 days! We even have exhibitors this year who tried the sale in their premises last year returning to the show again this year. i could go on with all of the benefits of an exhibition both as a buyer and an exhibitor but really is it worth it. sometimes no matter how much you do you are always going to have someone who wants to promote the negaitve. Everyone though is entitled to their own opinion as we all know.

Anyway first day of show - and just wanted to let you know after last year's debacle with the parking we have worked closely with the venue and they have promised us everything is under control. Public parking will be again through gate 7 Langs road, and this year disabled parking will be through gate 4 (the guards will need to see your disabled pass) and you will be parked close to the entrance. we will again have the shuttle bus running between parking and the venue all day.

Also have addresses catering with the venue and gone are the gourmet burgers (we received many comments on these) and they have been replaced with more normal food. Healthy options are again available.

Hope to see you at the show - don't forget to visit the forum lounge we have supplied tea, coffee and water in there and its somehwere for you to sit and take a break!!

Happy Melbourne Timber Show everyone
Liz

Hope this helps.

I spotted a new stand this year. Gorilla Glue (http://gorillaglue.com.au/) has a stand run by Aaron Penney and is well worth a look-see. If you haven't tried it before they have a 60ml sampler that would be worth getting for a trial run. This stuff expands 300% in use and fills gaps quite well. The product has a pretty good shelf life of two years. They also make a PVA which is at the stand too. Attached Thumbnails

I think you are right A-M. The showers were a nuisance factor only. I purchased a nice length of Blackwood only to find that is was 400mm longer than the ute, :C so I had to scramble to find some plastic bags to cover the exposed end. Just as well I did as the rain was quite heavy on the homeward trip.

While doing my turn on the Forum stand I met some very nice people and hopefully we directed some newbies to the WWF site.

Congratulations to Neil and Groggy for making the WWF stand work. :2tsup:

Oh! by the way the images Groggy posted at 11:00am did not really reflect the true extent of the attendances as when I left around 2ish the place was really humming.

I had a good day at the show. I caught up with some people I havent seen since the last show. I found some very nice pieces of timber but there didnt seem to be as many timber sellers as there were last year. I didnt find the bloke who had all the gidgee and other hardwoods last year and I was really hoping to get some more of his timber. I found a very nice semicircular burl slice about 60mm thick with a diameter of around 800mm for $40. That had to be the find of the day!

Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I had to leave early to go and look at a house to rent as we have to move. Well it was worth the look and I hope we get the house. Theres a 4 car garage in the front yard with 15 amp power in it!!!!! WOOHOOOO! Plenty of 10 amp outlets as well and a power sub-board in the garage. I didnt really care what the rest of the place looked like. The real estate chick couldnt work out why I would not come out of the shed and have a look in the house but she didnt even know the difference between 15 amp and 10 amp outlets. She learned something today.

Anyway I am going back to the show tomorrow and I'm sure I can make up the lost two hours. Hopefully I can run into a few more forumites tomorrow. I have another stint on the forum stand, and seriously its the most enjoyable part of the day, just chatting to people and helping them to get the most out of the forum. Anyway a great day was had by all.

Regarding the disabled parking. This year it is right outside the venue where the exhibitors used to park. You can't get much closer so they have listened and done something about it :2tsup:

Note: For those who would like something changed about the shows, this is why it is important to place comments either here or at the venue. If the organisers are able to do something about it they generally do, this is a good result.

Wow, what a day, infinitely better than last years and for the first time I'll be going back for seconds tomorrow. Dropped by the UBeaut stand, picked up some EEE (great price!) and got told off for using too much Glow on my rag (I promise not to use too much next time!). Seemed as though there was bucket loads of amazing timber and Carroll's had a massive presence as well. And I'll vouch for the improvement in disabled parking, my Father appreciated the very short walk to the entrance.

I had a good day at the show today, with the parking situation being the only complaint. Whatever suburb the pavillion is in, the parking lot must be in another! It is a long, long walk. The shuttle bus was full on the three occasions I tried to board it, and it was quicker to walk than to wait. Next year, I'll revert to taking public transport, because the tram stop is quite adjacent. That said, the various stands seemed well-presented, and the demos well-worth attending. As usual, there was a lot to learn.

Just a few comments about the show which I went to yesterday,I have been to several over the years and find less and less intrest for me, maybe because i'm not into turning which there seems to be more of each year.
But thats fine as I guess thats what a lot of people want.
It is a good chance to see a lot of stuff in the one place that you may have to travel a lot otherwise.
The earlier shows had a guy who sadly passed away from cancer(can't remember his name exactly, but can remember him well ) Les may of been his name,he ran a couple of sessions which showed gadgets and whats new, also the "how to"of various power and hand tools as well as some hints on finishing, other demo's showed the how to of hand sharpening.
Thats what I would like to see more of.
The suttle bus made the long trip to the car park a lot better being loaded up with stuff.
Will most likely go again next time.
Cheers:)

I wasn't planning to, but as the project I had planned for today fell in a screaming heap I ended up at the WWW Show (I can't help myself). Damn long walk in the rain from the car park to the building where the show was being held. Don't tell me there was a shuttle bus, because if I had waited for it in the rain I would have drowned :((.
On a positive I saw two very good demo's by Giulio Marcolongo one on pepper mills and another on turning an eccentric bowl. Giulio is always entertaining, even one handed. I saw another demo by another guy someone or other on the Tru-grind sharpening system, also very entertaining.

I enjoyed the Friday talking to others from the Forum is always great. :2tsup: On the show side of things, I reckoned it was smaller and it didn't do much for me to be honest.

When I was leaving I did have a laugh, there was a group of school kids sitting on the steps and two were proudly holding cardboard cut-outs of the Makita Girl - now if I could have grabbed one myself that would have been a plus - but SWMBO would have raised a few questions.

Left home at 6.00am and got there 5 mins before doors opened.

Got 2 nice bits of timber from Mal Ward at Boutique Timbers, now I just have to get some chopping boards made in the next 2 weeks, cos the wedding that they will be a present for is then.

Picked up a couple of bottles of food safe oil from U-beaut.

Called in and saw Colen Clenton, he insisted on pulling my 8" square apart to give it a polish up, and spent about 30 minutes chatting.

Visited the Tormek guys and found out what I was doing wrong, hopefully I can put into practice what they showed me.

Picked up a couple of other bits and pieces and then I was done.

Left just after 3 and got home at 6.45.

Not long before bedtime. :D

I had a great day at the show today. I was very pleased I only purchased the things that I had ordered several months ago from Colen Clenton and Terry
Gordon. A A55 Jointer, a sliding mortice gauge, a set of 3 dovetail markers and a cute little spoke shave.
I'm a lucky fellow.
I enjoyed a quick catch up with Chris Vesper, Trent Powrie, Terry Gordon and of course Colen Clenton.
I made a quick fly by vistit to the forum stand for a little chin wag too.
The numbers seemed down and some said the sales were slow others were very happy with it ticking over well.
My first full day without the kids in 18 months. It was fun.
All the best

I had a good time on day 2. One of the timber sellers had a few very nice burl slices I had somehow missed the day before, so i picked out the best of them and I mentioned to the cashier that I didnt believe i could have missed these ones yesterday. I was relieved to hear that they had got the lucas mill man to cut them yesterday arvo so my powers of observation arent in doubt.

Yesterday I bought a large heavy block of ebony which was discounted as it was discoloured. They told me it was from mangrove mud it was sitting in in he solomans. I put it through the thicknesser and it came up beautifully so i bought another piece the same today. I think I have enough ebony now for a while.

Also a big thankyou to Sturdee for his generous donation of some daily random draw prizes for volunteers working on the forum stand. I was lucky enough to have my name drawn out today so I am now the proud owner of two handscrew clamps handmade by Sturdee himself. Sturdee I am sure we all appreciate your generosity, particularly those of us who have won. Thanks Sturdee.

Unfortunately, I cant attend tomorrow due to other enterprises i need to devote time to, but I hope everyone has a good day.

Had a great day at the show yesterday. Met a heap of forumites and called in to all my favourite vendor stores for a yakka. Didn't buy much for a change, all though I'm yet to completely pay my bill at Carrols .

There was a decent sized slab of highly figured coolabah burl 60mm thick I was very temped in buying, only $50 due to cracks, but perfect for casting. Even though 60mm is a bit thin for pepper grinder blanks, I would have made them work. However even after cutting in ~8 solid 350-400mm long blanks, plus a heap of edge slices for more WW blanks, they still would have been ~25kgs worth of blanks - a bit too much for plane. I told vendor if it doesn't sell, take it to the Bris show next year and I will buy it then :U

Great effort by Groggy on the stand, every time there were not any volunteers, he filled in.

Although pleased to see all the forumites that volunteered on the stand, there were plenty of other SLACK forumites there that didn't volunteer :~.

Free entry, free tea/coffee/cakes/buscuits, lounge to relax in, other forumites to talk to and compare notes on show etc - why wouldn't you volunter and hour of your time :?:?:?

But I missed Guilio's performances. When I saw him the first time there about 10 years ago doing a bowl in an hour it got me hooked on turning and I came home with a Taiwanese MC900. It's been both a slippery and a long slope and I don't regret any of it.

More than just a little rude, pretty arrogant in my opinion, to brand others slack because they did not fit in with your notion of what forumites should do with their time.

There are a multitude of reasons why people don't volunteer their time, attitudes like that may just be one of them.

I am content to pay my pay, I prefer to pay the entry fee and would rather not bleat about lack of discount, wanting stuff cheaper just because it is a show.

My leisure hours are scarce enough, I would rather spend my time looking and buying, rather than just yakking away as you put it.

I don't think Dai Sensei meant any malice in the comment, I took it more tongue in cheek really. Besides I don't think it's anything to get your bloomers in a knot over. As you rightly commented, its your time, you do with it what you want. Just as I did.

Thank you to the many volunteers over the three days, especially those who kept drifting back and doing a bit extra :2tsup:

Sturdee provided 6 clamps to be drawn for prizes for the volunteers (Allan at Wallan won the last draw) - thanks Sturdee. :2tsup: :2tsup:

I think myself pretty fortunate to be able to get as many volunteers as I do, they allow me to scamper off and get photos, spend money and generally enjoy the show. I don't 'expect' volunteers but I do hope a number of people will assist (and they do). This year we had a few less volunteers, but I counter that by saying we have been very fortunate in previous years. Like some of the vendors I am happy to take some bad with the good, so please, no more discussion on the topic.

I spoke to a number of vendors and attendees and was quite surprised at the differing opinions out there. Some attendees said it was quiet, others busy, some thought it was the best show they had attended and others (mostly) said the high standard set by the new managers was continuing.

Complaints all seemed to revolve around parking, and having to walk a long way. Just a reminder that the parking is NOT under the control of the organisers.

I had a bit of a dummy spit with a security guard. Here's a tip folks - if you are ever a security guard, and insist that the door you just locked cannot be used by a tired exhibitor, then direct them 100 meters in the opposite direction to another exit, then, after they walk all the way up there, exit the building, then walk all the way back down to where you are - DO NOT open the door for one of your mates just as that bloke goes past and can see what you are doing!

I spent five hours at the Show, including a couple on the Forum
stand and enjoyed every minute of it.

As usual we expect to get some new Forumites out of and at
least introduced them to the site. It is great to see the excited
looks we get when we tell them it is free, a worldwide membership,
many different components to the site and the ability to ask questions
and post photographs of their work.

Plenty of demos on show so no one should have been disappointed
with that aspect. I thought the timber on sale was a bit down on
quantity this year, or was it sold on Friday and Saturday. Nevertheless
I thought the prices were reasonable.

Many thanks to Groggy for his sterling efforts and Neil for sponsoring
the stand. It was great to meet up with fellow volunteers again.

I made a few purchases so Jim Carroll can remain among Australia's
top ten richest persons. It is great to deal with Jim and Irene.

Finally I was a bit slack with the camera and only took one photo
... drool, drool. How many pens or needle cases could I make out
of these.

Thanks also to Peter for the clamps he donated which I fortunately
won.

I understand where Dai Sensai is coming from here and I agree 100% with the sentiment. He may have delivered his thoughts a bit more carefully, though, but I am sure he meant no malice to anyone who travelled several hours to get there and want to maximise their show experience. If I was in that situation I would not have volunteered for a stint on the stand either.

OK i attended two days and did an official hour on the roster and got in free both days. Woopee i saved $20! which is nothing compared to what I spent and it is even more insignificant compared to the knowledge and ideas i swapped with others from the forum and the general public attending the show.

In addition to my two rostered shifts I, Dai sensai and numerous others who were not officially rostered on at the time assisted Groggy by doing a bit of extra time when it was busy and nobody was rostered on on either side of the roster and groggy was carrying the can by himself.

Look at what I just wrote and compare it to the two sentences I quoted by Dai Sensai. I believe he was also expressing an opinion that it isnt fair to leave the forum stand organiser to do so many shifts. I agree that it isnt fair, and I will also state that nobody should feel that they are obliged to help out. But, with thousands of forum members living in melbourne I too find it amazing that it is so difficult to fill in 42 hours of volunteer activity. Groggy shouldnt even have to do a shift. there is enough work in being the stand coordinator to keep him busy.

Personally, I got into more interesting conversations and learned more when I was on the stand than I did wandering around. I would have gone on the third day too but i have other pressing engagements at the moment.

What I think the Sensai was getting at, and so am I, is give volunteering for a spot next year a try and see what you think. Volunteers do not get paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.

the strenght and value of the forum is its membership base. something to think about - the new member who Dai sensai, myself or one of the other volunteers persuaded to join the forum this weekend may just be the one who answers your next question and makes your next project a success, but if you are doing nothing, dont criticise those that are doing something.

I want to chime in and say my thanks to Groggy, Neil and all the others at the show who made my experience such a wonderful time.

I have been going for the last 3 years with my Dad and this year it was perfect timing to reinvigorate my interest in woodturning and to foster a new interest in pyrography! :U

It was great to see the wonderful Demo's by Theo, Guilio and Ken W and some bloke called ! My thanks go to Doug Bell and his wife Sandra for letting me hog one of their pyrography machines all morning on Friday. :) Oh and also to Dad for buying some sweet swag :D

I can't wait to get stuck back into the shed and do more turning and burning!

Michelle

Oh BTW since Groggy was taking the photos during the show I thought I would get one of him too!

I was there for the three days of the show, my annual holiday whilst my wife is on holiday visiting her parents on the Gold coast, and thoroughly enjoyed my self.

Each day I did a shift on the forum stand and it is a real privilege to introduce others to this great forum which has helped me a lot and to which hopefully I make a contribution.

I know manning or womanning :U the stand is not for everyone but it is not difficult and you mainly get to meet a lot of other forumnites so if you get the chance please do volunteer.

My only problem at the show was that I spent too much money there, unlike Ern I still need things :D, or I'm prodded by my daughter that we need those extra things.

I was pleased to be able to give those hand screw clamps, the draws were made by Neil and Pauline of Ubeaut, and I'm glad that they were won and will be used by some great people who regularly support the forum stand every year.

Yes, I went the 3 days as I have for many years now.
I was with the Hand Tool Preservation Assoc. Of Aust.
I had to Pump that Wood Lathe made for South Africa.
So after 2 hrs. on that, & not getting younger, I was a bit pooped, but did call in on The Forum Stand, said Hello to quite a few, & hopefully directed a few Newbies to the Forums, but it was not for long I'm afraid.
Yes, Many Thanks go to Neil ( hope the leg gets better quickly) & Pauline & a big plus to Greg also.
He said he was happy with everybody filling most of the places on the Stand.

Now for 1 very stupid thing, well I thought so anyway.
I use a Van to get around in, & I like to pick up Wood Laying on the Ground.
So the Hand Saws I have have had it, so I thought I would buy a New Panel Type Saw, with the Hot Teeth, & usually very Cheap, under $10.

Well you've got to be Joking, a Wood Show & not a Hand Saw anywhere, other than the ones on Chris Vesper site, but they weren't what I was after
I found that absolutely amazing.

I've been Turning for 30 yrs. & over the 3 days, I picked up 3 really good Ideas, that I will put into practice immediately.
So there is ALWAYS a reason to go.

I was really lucky to get to the show this year. We had a new addition to our family just a couple of weeks back and I had a significant birthday this weekend so time is very precious. I'm very fortunate to have a wife who made it work for me.

I got there late morning and had a bit of a wander around to see what was there. I was pretty happy with the range and thought the pricing was quite reasonable on a few items that I was interested in.

I've been following and admiring Chris Vesper's work for a few years now; it was pretty busy on his stand when I first stopped by so I continued on. When I came back later it was a little quieter and following a nice chat with Chris I picked up a beautiful joinery knife that will be a reminder of this birthday for years to come. I also had another look at his sliding bevels and squares which are works of functional art. As time passes I hope to add some of these to my daily use tools.

Chris on the Ubeaut stand was very helpful with a query I had about an antique clock I need to refinish. I picked up a fresh bottle of sanding sealer for this job and am now planning the task with more certainty.

I picked up a Veritas medium shoulder plane from the Carbatec stand too. I almost bought one at the last show I was at but thought it overpriced at the time. This time I was pleasantly surprised. They are a very well manufactured tool with excellent functionality that I've been chasing for some time but it is, to my mind, a bit of an indulgence.

I spent quite a bit of time chatting with some of the timber suppliers about my requirements for several forthcoming projects. What is really difficult for many of these guys are the freight costs. I felt there was less timber on display this year than the last show I was at, however, I can't guarantee this is objective.

I wasn't going to buy large pieces of timber on Friday, I don't have anywhere to put any more just at the moment! However, it was a great opportunity to talk to folks about what my needs are and plan for future work. There's nothing quite like talking through your options with the guy who is going to source and mill the timber for your job. I had a productive chat with Mal Ward and he put me in contact with others for some of my other requirements. Mal's a great bloke and my thanks go out to him.

As I was doing a later slower turn around the stands I noticed that the crowd around the Harold&Saxon/HNT Gordon/Colin Clenton stand had thinned out a little and used the opportunity to have a closer look at some of the pieces on display - all great stuff. I was as impressed as I always am with the quality of work by these fine craftsmen. Colin was as friendly as he always is and I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with him about his work and methods.

I picked up a couple of other vital things for a job I am starting next month from the always helpful Mark at Just Tools too.

I was having a great time just carefully looking through the displays before I was reminded by a security guard that the show was closing in three minutes :o. A quick scamper back to the parcel pickup averted disaster and I managed to catch the last shuttle bus back to the car.

I had a great time and hope the direction of the show continues along these lines.

It's good to know that those that attended appeared to have enjoyed their time at the WW show.

I know for certain I would have, happen that circumstances allowed me to be there.

I will get back over there at some time and I do not mind also donating my time on the stand,if I can help in some small way I will, this is in some way a small measure of something I can give back to the forum that has for many years given me pleasure.

Thanks Greg for all your efforts with the photo's in showing parts of the show for all to see.

Cheers:)

Back in Tassie, had a ball at the show on all three days. I went to more seminars than usual and learnt something from all the demonstrators. I manned the Forum stand on Friday and Saturday for 2 hours each day, it was great to meet other members and find even more as they walked past.

I really enjoyed talking to the show attendees. It was fun watching them walk past and trying to evade eye contact thinking I was selling something, only to find out after I had engaged them in conversation that membership of this great forum if free.

Thanks to Sturdee for his Day 1 prize and also saving me $235.00. By the time I got back to the Vermec stand on Sunday morning, all the multi centre chucks had been sold.

Thanks to Greg on his efforts on the stand, there will be no more bench jokes after I see a photo of the finished bench in use with it's first glue blob and shavings all over it.:U

I think you guys who manned the forum stand in Melbourne are understanding how much enjoyment this can be. I am eager for the Sydney show. :U

I enjoyed the show too.
Didn't enjoy the 2km walk from the carpark, but that has been discussed already.
My impression seems to be the show gets smaller each year. Maybe I just notice the exhibitors missing from previous years.
Enjoyed the plane sharpening demo from Jim Davey.
Enjoyed rummaging through all the bits and pieces from the "miscellaneous" displays like McJing, Toolking, and the guy whose name I forget, but he always seems to have the second hand screws and taps and things.
Doesn't matter how many times I have seen it, always get mesmerised by the Gifkins demos. (and the concept of paying $1000 for a dovetail jig!)
Got some bibs and bobs from the above mentioned rummaging, plus some gorilla glue, some router bits, and some clamps.

Still, it isn't like the glory days of the early 00's, when there used to be carbatec, timbecon, leda, hare&forbes etc, all showing 3 or 4 different models of table saws. Lots of other exhibitors I miss.

Well, this was my first ever Working with Wood Show, and I am still amazed at just how much interesting stuff was going on and on display. I was like a kid in a candy store, only it was a little more expensive than a candy store, and there wasn't mum there to say 'No, you can't have that'. So yes, my wallet did take a little damage while I was between watching demos. I went on all three days, Friday and Saturday from 10-3 and Sunday 2-5, and didn't even get to see a quarter of the stuff I would have liked to have seen.

Now I must confess I didn't get over to the Forum stand to meet other members, something I regret not making time to do (I should volunteer to to do a stint or too on the stand next year, definitely felt like I hadn't been here long enough to volunteer this year). I did meet Issatree on Friday though, over at the Hand Tool Preservation stand and had a chat with him.

The absolute highlight of the show for me though, was watching Guilio in his turning demonstrations. I know how hard it is to demonstrate something and talk while doing so, and he did it magnificently. I was in awe, but at the same time came away thinking 'I can do that (with practise, of course)', a testament to his demonstrating abilities of course. Guilio also gave me a peice he made in a demonstration, which I must say, absolutely made my day (or week or month or...). I feel I have come away from this both a better turner, and even more inspired (not that I need that with exams at Uni in 2 and a 1/2 weeks  ).

Of course, I bought a bunch of timber and some tools, just need more hours in the day to play with it all.

If anyone was wondering, WE GOT THE SHED. oops I mean - house. we move in on 5 november.
