View Full Version : Uploading Images that are big enough to see but small enough to upload

I just had a little search around for a free program that will optimise your images so that the display size is large but the upload size is less than the 100kb limit.

I found JPEGCompress. You can download it from http://internode.tucows.com/preview/364303.html

Install the program and then open your JPG image and move the slider until the size of the image is less than 100KB which is shown down the bottom right hand side of the screen. Try and make it as close to 100KB as you can.

Select File/Save As from the menu and save your file and Bob's your Uncle.

I've attached some samples.
The original image is around 450KBs. The size of the image is 1280 x 960 pixels.
I resized this image so it was small enough to upload and ended up with an image of 400x300 pixels.

I then used JPEGCompress on the original image and selected a compression of 56 and ended up with an image that is still 1280x960 but is only 95KB in size.

Hope this helps.

Any dog is a dog as long as it is bigger than a cat.
Not fond of small yappy dogs.

I am running windows 98Se and it comes with Microsoft Photo Editor. All you need to do is open your picture in this program. Go to File, Properties, Resolution and change the number of pixels to what you want.

Works for me.

I'm sorry to hear this. :D

Windows XP comes with Paint which doesn't allow you to do this. As far as I know changing the Resolution will not have any effect on a screen. Most screens are 96 dots per inch (DPI) and some of the older ones are 72dpi. The resolution will have an effect when you print it. JPEGCompress changes the quality setting JPGs which will make it smaller and suitable for only viewing on a screen. Print it and it will look really crappy.

There are a lot of programs out there that will do this. I just looked for a free one and one that showed the resulting image size before you wrote it to disk.

Grunt XP Pro has the photo editor. Adjust the size, crop and resolution no worries. You can probably download it somewhere and stick it into Home.

I've got several things that do this stuff. Irfanview is my favourite viewer, image manipulator and batch converter. I use Gimp when I want to do proper photo editing and graphics work.

BTW, great dog you got there.

If you are lucky enough to have Adobe Photoshop (work paid for mine!) then you can use the "Save for Web" option and switch to JPG format. It still allows you to set JPG compression level but still produces high quality images with small filesizes. It is the best option I have seen, but yould expect that from a pretty pricey piece of software :p

Grunt, May I Hi-jack your thread a bit more..:D ..It'll happen anyway. We picked up "Jacks" from the RSPCA just after Christmas. He's a two year old male kelpie/border collie who was taken from the previous owner for reasons undisclosed but he "was" very thin.

He's great with the kids, loves the car. beach and walks. He seems to learn very fast. I don't know how anyone in there right mind could see to mistreat such a great mate.

BTW at $250.00 with micro-chip, sterilisation, vaccinations, worming and vet check adopting a dog from the RSPCA can be a better deal than many of the shoddy breeders around.

Are you struggling with the basics (Ie don't know how to get started) or is there a specific problem you are having?

hate to admit it but its the basics. Im really new to forums like this and dont use the pc for pleasure, only business, so your help would be apprteciated. Ive probably missed something very obvious somewher in the forum so apologies in advance for wasting your time if thats the case.

No, it's not entirely straight-forward and some of the help is a bit out of date.

There are probably 2 ways to add you own pic to your post and it depends where the pic is and what you want to do with it.

If the pic is on your PC then you can add it blicking on the Manage Attachments button that is close to the bottom of the new thread/post page. Click on the browse button and select the file and then press upload. You can add a number of pics but there is a 100k limit to these files and they appear at the bottom of your post.

If you want a larger pic to appear in the middle of the post then the picture needs to be on the internet somewhere. This may mean that you need to upload the picture onto the internet somewhere. Most ISP's give you some space that you can use to store your own files. You will need to check with your ISP about how you access that area. Alternatively you can use a picture that you have found somewhere on the internet. Once it is on the internet somewhere, click on the Insert Image button at the top of the New thread/post and enter the URL of the image.

The first option is by far the easiest but does have some limitations. The majority of this thread is there to help you get your images down to under 100k. This is because digital cameras etc make your files very large so you need some software to reduce it. You can use the standard Photot Editor that comes with windows, but it isn't very efficient.

I just email a piccy to me and the downsize option kicks in, when its done I right click the image and save in my pictures.
You can do this without sending the email and just delete when you have saved the reduced image.

I have posted the following picture reduction technique before, so some may recognise it. But it is so good that I feel obliged to do so again.

If you think that posting pictures to a 100kb limit is tough, then you should try the websites that limit picture size to 40 kb!! I have a fair amount of experience with Photoshop as well as freebees such as Irfan. But I now prefer to reduce pictures with MS Word. Yes, that's right, a word processor!

The biggest problem I have found is keeping the detail when reducing picture size. I just struggle to get it right and my 900+ kb pics end up looking blurred. Consider me a dummy, and that this tip is for my fellow dummies! :D

What to do? Open a blank word document and insert the picture. Save this as a htm/html file. Look up the saved file in Windows Explorer. You will find two associated files, both image files. One will be the original size (in the example I have used here, the original image was 925 kb). The second image is much smaller, typically around 30 kb here. You can manaipulate the size of this image by either reducing or enlarging the picture embedded in the word document. Below is the 925 kb image reduced to 42 kb.

Try it.

Theres words to describe pictures like that...two highly desirables in natural state at the top of their form....ahem, unfortunately they fall under the "pornographic" heading  and I cannot post them, however Derek, that makes you a harbinger of lustfull feelings ;) keep posting photos like that and you will become our #1 amateur tool pornographer.

BTW hope the trip went well.

I don't think anyone has mentioned irfanview. It's free and a must have tool for image work. I have used it for at least five years now and I use it every day along with gadwin printscreen.

Today I used irfanview to create a tool document with publisher. Irfanview was used to copy pieces of images and then they were pasted into publisher to create this document.

Also, if you want to do some more serious graphics stuff and still don't want to spend money, have a look at Gimp. It's a freebee and it's really quite powerfull.
You can get it from www.gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org/).

I was playing with some text effects using Gimp. It also does all the usual stuff that Photoshop et. al. does.
