bwk,
Welcome to the site and to turning.
Usually a box or bowl is hollowed out with a bowl gouge and cleaned up with a scraper.
It can all be hollowed with a scraper (although the purists will raise an eyebrow) and depending skill level as a beginner this may be easier for you. It will take longer than with a gouge. Jarrah is hard so tools need to be sharp. There are also a whole lot of specalist hollowing tools on the market but as a beginner it is best to learn the use of the basics first.
Check out some turning sites and utube to get some ideas.

It all depends on whether you are hollowing an end-grain or side-grain box.

If an end-grain box, bore a depth hole with a drill bit, then hollow with a spindle gouge, drawing the tool (angle presentation towards you at 45 degrees) from centre to out side.

As you near the outside, push the tool handle away from you towards centre. You will notice it when you hit side grain by the shavings.

Clean up the inside with a scraper.

For side-grain boxes, hollow as described with a bowl gouge. Easy!

BWK,,

FIND A CLUB!!!!,

THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO, is find a club near by , and get some lessons, or find a local who turns and get them to show you how to do the basic's.
