I am building a 3.65Mt canoe for a friend, and he wants to sail and have the option of power as well, the power side is fine, but I am having trouble with finding sail rigs .

The mate wants a balanced lug rig with a center board , instead of lee boards, does anyone have any info , on sail sizes, spar lengths , mast length and rigging please

Depends on how wide the boat is, & whether it is serious sailing.
Get MIK's drop-in rig plans & modify to suit ?
You could have a look at his Beth & maybe adapt the approximate measurements.
You could buy his Beth plans & have all the right measurements for spars & foils.

Have a squiz at Dylan Winter's Duck Punt build at KTL 4 : North Norfolk and the Wash « Keep Turning Left (http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/category/ktl-4-north-norfolk-and-the-wash/)

Just some ideas anyway.

I have not been told how much sailing he intends, but it will not be competitive.

The hull is 1176mm , and will weigh about 30Kg, I am building with E-LIGHT PLYWOOD , this is 9mm thick and is balsa core with light colour timber faces, 9mm sheet weighs 9.2 kg.

hulls is stitch and glue, and the exterior will get a full coat of 200grm cloth .

I have 1 sail rig ,see attached, and the main issue for me is position of the mast??

1176 x 3650...
that's a flea-bite off the size of my Bolger Teal. (my avatar).
It's a row/sail boat rather than a canoe.
I finished up buying MIK's OzRacer plans for the foils. Best $20 I've spent.
See this thread for my current sail size
http://www.woodworkforums.com/f33/paradox-micro-cruisers-bilge-runners-51280/index3.html#post777089

My centreboard leading edge is approx 12'' behind the mast. (Boat is upside-
down on trailer under a tarp so I'm in no hurry to measure it..)

WHAT couldn't be bothered???:D:D:D:D,

Thanks for the sail plan size , what are the basic dimensions of your the TEAL??

I have a 40x90mm Oregon mast here that was given to me , and I will use this for the spars , cut down of course,.

I was thinking of Terrelyne material for the sail, similar to shower curtain material,.

Teal (http://www.instantboats.com/teal.htm) 12' x 3'6"

Funny thing - I've done my mods to Teal by 'feel' & sight. Haven't got written
measurements for any of it. I've done a fair bit of measuring with a ruler off my
PC screen, so.... The attached pics should help with figuring relative locations.
By my jaundiced eye, the dagger board leading edge is about 400mm behind the
mast. With a smaller board than this, it yielded rampant lee helm. A Bad Thing.
A smaller board needs to be much further forward. My original NACA foil (white)
was about 225mm x 900mm. The OzRacer foil (blue) is about 300mm x 1200mm

It could take a bigger sail than mine in light wind, but it needs to be reefed early.
The boat might plane after a fashion with a lighter crew than I, but with me
aboard, leaving the full sail up just puts things under excessive strain for little gain.

It's a nice little rowing boat, but a pain to paddle on account of being so wide and
having so much rocker. What are you building?

Thanks A.J,

the design is basically a Selway Fisher power Canoe, weight will be close to 25-30 Kg's, and a fully loaded displacement of 300Kg's max.

I am going to increase the hull depth amidships slightly currently 325mm , I am thinking of an increase of 50mm. I would begin this at the bow and add depth gradually until i have the 50 mm at the hull center , then taper to the stern
I have just finished , scarf joining 4 sheets of plywood (2 x2) , and I will sand the joins tomorrow and start lofting the hull planks ,

here are 3 Pic's from the web site,.

Cheers,
Jeff

Well I finished the Canoe, and sails as well, and here are the Pic's.

And would you believe that it hasn't been in the water as yet!!!!!.

The owner has not been able to launch it yet due to work &study commitments

Well it doesn't look like a canoe to me - more like a sailing dinghy, but whatever you call it she's a nice looking little craft :2tsup:. Job well done bloke.

Better tell the owner to get his priorities right :D.

The design is a highly modified english design, I had to create the pivoting center board and case, mast placement and sail plan, which may still need modification.

We will see after we get it on the water.
