My wood knowledge as we know by now is limited but growing. I have started playing with this burl, heavy in sap in hope of making a platter. Already the neighbours are interested in it (watching and laughing with beers while I duck the flying bits). At first I thought possible eucalypt but it has no smell, it is very hard so I am guessing some kind of gum?
Any advances on undescribed gum as a species?
Thanks

Looks like some kind of Euc.
I've seen Red Gum with a similar look to it.

I have a similar burl which was given to me its quite soft in places and breaks away easy where the gum/resin is. I made a pen which I soaked thin CA into the blank even before drilling.

My own personal pen.
I still have two pieces for bowls which I am considering soaking in resin/epoxy first as even when using the BS to cut it it was falling a part.

In my opinion, it is either Redgum Burl, or Salmon Gum

IMHO it is blackbutt - same texture as (3) platters tha tI have just finished. Nearlyridentical actually. I think Greg Ward would confirm as I obtained them from his sources. Hope that helps, John M.
