I have done this about a week ago so thought I'd try putting up some pics, so here goes:rolleyes:. Fitting DRO scales to Chin Hung lathe.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8321-p3080156sm.jpg
Some final alignment checking after final tightening of mounting screws

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8322-p3080157sm.jpg
Ditto.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8323-p3090158sm.jpg
Sorting the read head mounting:rolleyes:

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8324-p3090162sm.jpg
Cutting up old Al.bracket for some plate.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8325-p3090168sm.jpg
Plate machined and shaped to fit in ends of cover.

I recon it's a bugger of a job fitting scales and no matter how many mounting bits come with em there's always something you have to make or modify or sumsuch :CAnother 4 pics to come, next post:o.

Cheers.

If I'm not right, then I'm wrong, I'll just go bend some more bananas.

Finally right.

Cover fitted, sure glad that's over with.

The new scales fitted to my old display. I want to try it out for a while fitted to the saddle. If I'm happy I'll then shorten the cables or at least enclose them in a tube mounted on the vertical or horizontal arm.

All working good:U

Cheers.

hi mate that's interesting. in the first photo. you have some dials set up at the back of the cross slide.
how come and do you have any more photos?

You need to make sure that the scale is parallel to the bed and also that its level in the horizontal plane.

pipeclay answered your question:2tsup:, are there any areas or items in particular that you want pics of?, now that I've conquered posting pics it's fairly simple to do:D.

To expand on the scale set up. First the scale has to be mounted so when the mounting screws are tightened there is no twisting or bending being induced into the scale and that the scale is true, within parallelism tolerance , 0.1mm to 0.15mm to the slideways in both planes.

Second the read head is then set up so it is parallel to the scale in both planes and that the gap between scale and read head is within tolerance, this one's gap tolerance is 0.8mm to 1mm. It's prudent that the factory plastic spacer that is between the read head and scale is not removed until the read head is positioned fairly correctly. The plastic spacer is about 1mm thick so is a good guide during set up.
After slipping the plastic spacer out then tightening the screws that hold the read head to the mounting brackets the gap usually changes slightly so further adjusting or shimming is necessary. A suitable thickness feeler gauge is used at all corners of the read head to see if the gap is as close to correct as one can get it, usually a frustrating exercise.:C

The scale on the x axis is mounted the same on my lathe.... It is a pity it cannot be mounted in a different way as it means you cannot use the dovetail built into the cross slide for other attachments..

Yea, bit of a pain that. I purposely mounted the scale as far towards the front of the cross slide as possible, ended up with about 5 inches of dovetail available at the back. If I ever wish to mount anything on the cross slide I'd make the mount to use the left side dovetail, what's available on the right, and drill and tap a hole towards the front on the right side to take a bolt.

Bugger also that you lose use of the cross slide lock screw.

Side tracked slightly now, I went and picked this up today.

I'm not going to do any major restoration on it, it runs,:2tsup: so I'll just clean it up a bit and start using it, see how it goes.:D

Yes Ray the work table pivots on the top of the carriage.:2tsup:. Unfortunately:C it doesn't have fine adjustment at the end, only the hold down nut in the middle of table then hand bump the table to the degree reading just to the front of the nut.

I've worked out how I could fit a fine adjustment at the end with just leaving the clamp nut firm.

Looks rough with the G-clamp holding the read head and bracket in place but it's gently done. There is a steel strip under the top jaw of the clamp to spread the load and the plastic spacer is in place between the read head and the scale.

Just unloaded, bit of diesel sprayed on.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8541-p3280005sm-metal-planer.jpg

Most of what looks like a lot of rust is only grunge and mostly scrapes off pretty well with a small paint scraper.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8542-p3280006sm-metal-planer.jpg

Gearbox, hydraulic pump, hydraulic control valve are all a later addition. This machine was originally a gear and rack driven table.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8543-p3280007sm-metal-planer.jpg

The hydraulic pump and control valve. Behind the control valve can be seen one of the three cast hubs that stick out from the body, the other two are being used for control shafts and are to the left.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8544-p3280008sm-metal-planer.jpg

Hydraulic motor at the top, this raises and lowers the cross slide, there is also a handle for manually doing it.

http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/73752-log/albums/pics-log/8546-p3280011sm-metal-planer.jpg

Showing the left hand end oil bowls with the rollers. There are the same at the right hand end. Because the slideway extensions(covers) are missing there is a lot of metal chips and other crap in the oil bowls. After cleaning more of the machine I'll clean these reservoirs out. I've had the machine running and it runs very well.

The rusty look isn't really as bad as it looks:2tsup:. For some reason rust always looks terrible in a photo. I've even taken pics of pretty good pieces of steel or of good machines and sometimes, mostly, the rather nice looking pieces of bare steel dissappoint in the photo:((.

The main thing is that the machine is basically in good to very good condition. The conversion has been done really well, and I know the history of that. Unfortunately the man who did the work is now dead and no one knows the make of the machine:no:.

You can see the cut outs in this end to clear the fabricated steel box like extension that is bolted to the table top. On the end of the extension can be seen the nut that holds the end of the hydraulic ram.

Hi .RC. , Thanks, yes the machine looks so far to be in pretty good shape. The transport mob was Mitchells in Bathurst, the seller used his forklift to load it down there, I used my old Hyster forklift to unload it, it's a big old un with a capacity of 3650Kg. Luckily there is a good accessible surface under it in the guts of the machine. I had to drag each end of the machine closer to the edge of the truck as it was loaded right on the centreline. Freight from Bathurst was $492.80, even if I owned a truck or a trailer and vehicle capable of towing it I wouldn't have driven down to get it as it wouldn't be any cheaper.

Hi Ueee, Items for scale, I'll do some measurements and put them up eventually with any other details that may be of interest.

Hi Anorak Bob, Yep am happy with what I have, just have to fit the planer in somehow, it's outside in front of the shed covered with a tarp, I sprayed it well with anti-corrosive first as it's been raining today on and off, we're all over the rain over here at the moment.

Nah Ueee, I think I'm a bit less than a bit more than a tad less than arf way thru some of it. You see the other day I bought a 6'x 4' box trailer for $50, now one doesn't get much goodness with a $50 box trailer if you know what I mean:D:doh:. It's saving grace is it has good wheels and hubs, very good tyres (damn, I had to add tyres to spell checker, what's the world coming to), it also has good axle, springs, tow coupling, 7 pin plug and tail-lights,,I'll say the rest is----- well you know,,,,,,,another so and so project.

Yea I sprayed the paint, White Knight Rustguard epoxy Brunswick Green. I put a fair bit of work in preparation, sanding, bogging, sanding, bogging, sanding, spot puttying, sanding, ditto ditto ditto bla bla bla. Did I say sanding?:D:doh:.
All the panels and covers etc are up on the mezzanine floor they are painted and ready for attachment. Still have to work on the saddle and work table etc.

Yea yea yea I know:D, planer ASAP:rolleyes:, though I have some work I have to get out this week and some I have to get well under way.

Go here for a rough and ready video of it running. Metal Planer :: Metal Planer, unknown make video by Terro_au - Photobucket (http://s408.photobucket.com/albums/pp163/Terro_au/Metal%20Planer/?action=view&current=PICT0056.mp4)

When I get it leveled and bolted down I'll make a new vid.

Ha ha :D, nay it's on the floor, I still had the forklift there as I wasn't sure of the placement and just needed a break to ponder it and have a feed:D:rolleyes:.

No particular work planned:doh::D,,,,,,,,,

Cheers.

Looking good Log:2tsup:
She certainly makes a pretty recognizable noise! I didn't think the feed was jerky, just the camera operator...:D Its damn hard to hold a camera still.....you think you have done ok when you watch it back on the tiny screen, but on the big screen its a like an earthquake!
Cant wait to see some chips!

Thats awesome!!!!:2tsup::brava::thumbup:

Whats the cutting speed? Looks slowish but its hard to tell.
Well done!

Hi all, glad you liked seeing it do something:2tsup:, me too:D:rolleyes:.

Regarding the cutting speed Ueee, I'll have to lengthen the stroke and time the forward stroke and work out the metal cutting speed for the four speeds. That example on the video was in third gear, the gear box is a 4 speed small car box. It was a quick rather unprepared test run as well.
All the planers I've seen on Youtube seem to run fairly slow, likely because of the mass of the table having to change direction rather quickly, especially so if a decent sized job was on it.

Cheers.

Happy new year to one and all!!!

Well I got this machine back in late August 2012, finally got around to bringing it inside in December. 1500mm between centres and a 450mm swing, 5 morse taper tailstock.

Below is as received, original paint, paint chipped in a few places, back splash guard a bit knocked around and machine a bit untidy BUT it has done very little work and is in very very good condition, a winner http://www.woodworkforums.com/images/smilies/actions/2thumbsup.gif/bmi_orig_img/2thumbsup.gif.

Another shot as received.

Here it is in it's spot, I had to move the Chin Hung lathe in further and around a corner. I have yet to fit steel pads under and level it, but have used it and it's all good.:D:yippy:

Lathe is Polish, they make em pretty heavy duty :2tsup:

Yep the grinder was unloaded here on behalf of my brother in law, it's in his shed at his house.

The truck driver also unloaded a Pacific FTV-2 milling machine:D, for me:D:D.

As Received
