Thanks very much. Sorry for the short post, i was on the way out the door. This is a new technique to me. It started as something to do while I wated for glue to dry. When I saw the grain, I realized it had to be a little more. I don't know what the wood is but I'm glad it went to this project. Please enjoy.

Hello Bill,
I allways ask myself the question when turners come up with stunning designs like yours and are able to execute such ideas to the utmost finest details, if they have had at one time or an other some substances in their pipe and smoked it ???. Mybe I have to start smoking as well and get some inspirations.. I like your artwork as a matter of fact, I Iove it.

Joevan.

I've been waiting for someone to ask the obvious question, but no one so far has done so. So I'll have to ask, cause I'm intrigued. Bill, how do you get the second piece of timber inside the main vessel?

Bill, how do you get the second piece of timber inside the main vessel?I reckon I've worked it out but was going to wait for someone else to ask - took long enough Brendan :;

You did a great job Bill.
Here are a couple of photos of bowls that Trent Bosch did at the AWSA conferenc in PE in 2010. It took him a couple of hours to do the demo and was amazing to watch the Illusion appear, apparently the yellow balloon is the secret.

Ok. no-one is forthcoming with the answer (a bit like the magician with his tricks) so I'm going to take a stab at how it is done. The balloon has confirmed what I thought.

The second piece of wood (the insert) is rectangular or square in shape and is only like a shallow square edged bowl. It is turned first and then passed through the opening of the first piece on an angle (this is why the carving is important) and glued in place. The balloon is needed to apply pressure to the insert from the inside to keep it place while the glue dries. So it is passed through the opening and then inflated. Clever.

That's my take on it. Anyone else??

Good guess Brendan but not quite right. the following is a copy of the notes I made at Trents demo
The insert is ci.rcular, thin and the grain must curve with the curve of the bowl. It need to overlap the entrance by about 1/2" all round. Best if you use kiln dried as it snaps back better.
Boil the insert till it is saturated, bend it and insert into bowl.
Let it dry and glue with epoxy because they are dissimilar wood.
Insert balloon and blow it up until it hold the insert firm against the mouth and start bragging.
In these two photos you can see the circular edge in the red bowl and the second is the insert for the Jacaranda bowl being turned. Its quite big.

In the original photos I posted the red bowl (cant remember the wood) is being held upside down for the photo.
Seeing Bill's excellent effort make me ashamed that my effort has been waiting two years for its insert.

I was thinking along the same lines as Brendan and reckon it would be do-able and easier - one day when I get time..... :C

That one is georgous. Trent really has these mastered. I have a little different twist on it I'm going to try. I just got a new Powermatic 4224 lathe. Once I get all set up I'll get on it right away. Thanks very much for sharing his piece. I hope I get to meet him some day.:2tsup:

I'm excited to say, this vessel just made the WOW cover. I never would have expected it and I'm truly honored to have been selected. Gotta give thanks to Trent for producing the dvd that teaches the technique. I'm glad I was able to put my own slight twist to it. Also just have to say thanks to everyone that inspire me, there's a lot of you out there.:2tsup:
