Got back in the workshop last week, (we are having a mini heatwave here in the UK, might go through the 21c barrier today)

Intended to do a chessboard effect tissue box and prepared some Maple and Black Walnut, however the BW became unstable after preparation and would not have been suitable to work with for the pattern I intended.

However, the BW will not be wasted so started a new box as above.

Hello Bob, been hibernating like us northerners sometimes do.

(Travelling well, renewing passports next week)

Good Grief Woody. That (21c) is our mid winter temp here in Cairns Australia. At the moment we are at the tail end of summer. Day-time temp is around 34c with 89% humidity. It's hard to get things sanded properly when the sweat off your hands + the drips of sweat from your nose wets the timber all the time. ha ha.:oo::C

Sorry John. Travelling well - was refering to your health. But good to see that you are thinking of using the passport again.

I understood travelling well, and thought I would mention that our passports also expire next week, but there is an exchange rate problem compared with 2007.

Welcome back to the shed. I was also thinking when you would start up making the tissue boxes. :2tsup:

Hi, and hi to Pariss, I'll be tripping up to Cairns in June. Is there any places up there where you might be able to buy box making timber. Just curious. We're bringing our car up on the Sunlander,

Regards, Paul

Cleaned up the boards above and thicknessed to 8mm.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/2w-28.jpg

Prepared a board that was originaly 6mm thick down to 4mm on the thicknesser (to be used for bottom box sliders)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/3w-27.jpg

Did this using a platform in the thicknesse (18.5 thick) and setting the machine to thickness at 22.5mm as per picture below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/4w-29.jpg

The boards used to make the box are taken over to the router table and a 4mm bit puts a rebate suitable for the bottom sliders.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/6w-23.jpg

The boards are then machined for mitred corners using this jig.

Close up of jig.

Gluing up of box carcass proceeds next, I lay down poly and then put a strip of masking tape, sticky side up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/10w-22.jpg

the pieces to be glued are layed on top of tape, glue applied and the box sides are then folded to shape and masking tape holds the carcass in shape until set without any clamps.

Box glued and checked for size before lid and sliders are fitted.

Taking a day off to do some DIY, the shed roof needs the bitumous felt removed and replaced whilst we have a settled spell of weather

Got the shed roof done and fitted a new facia board as well, its a bit startling isn't it?

And look at that weather, England at its best.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/15w-17.jpg

Did a short spell in the WS as well, wanted a strip to decorate the lid, so put this piece in the thicknesser to clean it up and brought it down to around 3mm.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/13w-14.jpg

Lid decorated and should finish off box today.

It's amazing what you can do with Photoshop these days. Grey skies become blue with just a couple of clicks of the mouse!

Good to see you back into production mode with the boxes.

cheers,

ajw

Photoshop not needed this spring. :;

Put the roundover bit to carcass horizontal edges plus the lid and fitted yesterday. Plus cut the bottom sliders to size, needs cleaning up, sanding then a polish and will then be posted to a friend.

Got the sanding and a clean up done, I think it went well.

The appearance before a coat of shellac and wax finish applied, also the underside shows how the sliders are fitted.

Another excellent tissue box. Love the way you do these and the different thoughts behind each design.
