Can people please help me out with advice whether these are good bits and what to look for when buying these types of router bits.

Harry72 14th February 2005, 12:03 AM I thought they should be made from soild carbide not high speed steel, not a easy thing to sharpen these bits.

The HSS spiral bits will get you started for routing mortices, but they will not stay sharp for very long. You really need to get solid carbide ones, if you want long-lasting bits. A set of four, 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" including the two bushing adapters that you will need in order to use the 5/16" and 3/8" bits in a 1/2" collet, will cost US$129.95 from Lee Valley, but McJing, see http://www.mcjing.com.au/rbc/rbcframe.htm , sell solid carbide spiral upcut bits for comparable prices here in Australia. Their price for the same set is AUD162, and you would not need the adapters, since their 5/16" and 3/8" bits have 1/2" shanks. The above prices are exclusive of freight.

I'm not questioning the integrity of McJing with their upcut/downcut router bits but with the competitive market I do look at the quality as I personally like to see my bits last a while and I do wonder at the longevity/Tungsten in a relative unknown in the market.
I have'nt tried them and that is not to say that they are not comparible for one's requirements and thereby priced accordingly with Eastern Manufacturing,as such the bits may well cater for reasonable usage over time,with the occassional tune-up,
I have posted a link to what I consider a good price for sets of both up and down CMT bits and I thoroughtly endorse the bits particularly as I constantly employ them with the Leigh and the Incra Jigs with no adverse effects.

Harry72 15th February 2005, 01:16 AM John, I checked out that site(routerbitworld)the price of their CMT SUP's set was $142.49usd, at the current rate thats $182.91au. McJing's price is $182au and thats not even a set thats just brought singluar!
Done bit of research on carbide, the bits from McJings have a "K10" etched on them this is a iso grading(C3 US grade)this is a hardness of 92.4 R"a scale" and have a rupture point of 250000 psi sure not going to wear out quick!
