Hendey wiring

Out of interest , a few pics of the Hendey wiring setup.

A friend of mine who is an eletronics guru, has suggested the motor is of the type that changes from Delta to Star or vise versa as it is running .

There are two devices in a box under the bed , one of which appears to be a change over relay , and down the end , on the leg , is what i think is an overload trip .

I'm pretty sure the motor is original and 72 years OLD ! I am dubious about the insulation inside it :?

1st pic is the Star/ Delta contactors, 2nd is the run contactor and thermal overload and the 3rd pic is an isolator (on/off switch). Get an electrician to megga the wiring and motor before powering up. That will test the insulation of the motor windings and the control wiring.

In the first pic above (HENDEY1) , both devices are relays

behind the relay on the left is this , it is a manual switch ... four copper strips , go into ceramic contatcs ..does this lock it in either mode ..delta eg

Hi Mike,

I think you might have to consider rewiring the machine, I wouldn't be tempted to power it up without megger testing.

Old insulation can become crumbly and short out, can be dangerous.

What details do you have on the motor?
I can't remember if you have 3 phase power or not?

Star delta starters are readily available if you wanted.

Not sure what it switches but it may isolate the control supply. Is that a transformer above it with a small glass fuse on top or is that just a catch?
You wouldn't lock it in Star or Delta. It starts in star to reduce starting current then switches to Delta after a preset time period usually a couple of seconds. Long enough for it to run up to speed.
A contactor is just a higher current rated relay with three or four poles to switch all three phases at once.

Yes, looks like a transformer for the control voltage, I can't see any coil voltage ratings on the contactors, could also possibly be for a work light?

My plan is to strip the whole thing and rewire it .

The motor in it is 3 HP .... I will buy a new ( or good used ) 3HP 240 / 415 3 phase motor and run the VFD .

I don't like the thought of the 72 year old wiring inside that motor :o

I spotted a megger at the hamfest ....

Handy items to have. Grab one if it's cheap enough. I have an awesome bakelite wind up one. In new condition. I couldn't resist it. :D
