I've seen this or parts of it before, when I first started turning.

I'd forgotten about his tool rest. Now that I see it again, I realize how useful a sloping rest could be for bowl work. I never thought the tools were strange because right from the start I'd seen some ... ahem... "highly personalized" cutting tools.

Is that chuck going in the opposite direction?

Is that chuck going in the opposite direction?

Don't think so. The first bit looks like it but when he does the base of the foot with the "hook" tool you can see the direction the shavings are produced.

It was when he was hooking the inside on the far side that it looked like the wrong way. I've watched a few times, but maybe I've talked myself into it.

Around the 4 minute mark you can see the shavings appear inside the hook closest to his body.

I'm impressed. I wonder how many hours in front of the lathe it took to get that good.

I tried a home made hook tool (started by another turner, handled and sharpened by me).

The experiment lasted about 15 seconds with the hook being broken off, and the bowl going to the far corner of the shop.

I have not had the urge to try again. Circle tools also make me uncomfortable.

I sure like the idea of slicing off the wood, leaving a nice finish.
