Home made submarine project website

Kudos to the type of person who can start their own home made submarine project.......I just wonder if a person might have a certain lack of skills needed to make one, at least make one and survive the experience. I found this guy's page while looking for machinable plastic recipes and I was fascinated by statements like this:

"most DC motors will run just fine completely flooded with water, even salt water. All sorts of DC electronics will work without any protection, including solenoids, linier actuators, reed switches, and toggle switches."

Am I being too judgemental? or is this guy a Darwin award candidate.

He is just ambitious that's all.

Maybe he gets all his information from the internet. But no worries, have a look at his sub.If it all turns to poo:( :doh: there's a trapdoor so he can bail out.
The sub was clearly designed by the Thunderbirds:2tsup: so all should be well,after all, was Brains ever wrong?

I don't know about the salt water ,but I did see a Makita 9volt battery drill sprayed with Lanotec run in a 20 litre drum of water.

The answer then, is obvious, even to a thickhead like me:doh:, spray the sub in Lanotec, simple !:D:D:D

Something in me does say to me however that if he is preparing for the water in and around the electrics there will be problems. I have never been in a sub but I'm expert (usual definition) from watching the war movies and know that sub captains like to keep the water on the outside away from the sparky bits.

I thought the design looked familiar :rolleyes:, it looks to be more of a submersible than a submarine so that simplifies things a bit. From the drawings on other pages it looks like the hatches will not open if the three pipe stilts sink into the mud, in which case you'd be trapped on the bottom. I reckon Lanotec would be no good as it would part the waves like Moses as the water gets repelled!.

The guys on the site Pac Man listed look like they have some serious designs going.

last time i saw a sub it was a little worse for wear after being dropped while unloading it from a ship.
the thrusters looked a little different from the one in the links above. it was worth $6 million
