Gents, being new to this please be kind.:)
I purchased a new lathe Metal master SM-920A.
My problem is I can not get the tail stock to tighten.:((
If I take it off and tighten underneath it will not slide back on to the bed. If I keep it loose enough to slide back on to the bed it does not tighten up enough in the middle of the bed.:(
Is there a trick to it or have I got a lathe made on a Friday and the bed is not the same thickness along its length?:?
You assistance is welcome.:2tsup:

I would say it's a Friday lathe and the bed underneath is not true to the top.
Some guys convert theses lathes over to camlock to do away with the spanner.

Try tightening the adjusting nut with the tailstock on the bed. You might have to use a socket and extension bar with ratchet. Just keep nipping it up until you get the correct position of the tailstock locking lever.

Dave, the Steelmaster SM920A is already a camlock lathe.

My mistake, I thought it wasn't cam lock.

Lather, a spring under the tail stock on the bolt will keep it from grabbing.

The bolt under the tailstock is recessed and can not be tightened with a spanner, you have to turn the locking plate to do adjustments. What I am thinking might work is place a shim in the recess and expose the nut so it can be tightened. What will cause problems there is the cross members on the bed will get in the way a fair bit. Failing that who knows??

Have you measured along the length of the bed to determine how much variation there is?

All measurements taken and given to supplier. Still awaiting their reply. Maybe one day they will reply.

I measured my tailstock way for Lather and I have 0.05mm difference (which is nothing) end to end over the bed. My lathe is a 900 between centres Chinese lathe.

the way I did it was to replace the bottom lock nut with a shorter one and using washer to disable the recess . insert the tailstock back to the bed and adjust for the right tension.
hope this help

If you have a mill or a milling attachment for the lathe, you could make up a new clamping plate.
