buloke burl

this is a peice of buloke burl i turned about 8 months ago, aparently very rare.
its got the tightest burl grain i think ive ever seen about as hard as anything ive ever turned!

305mm diam. x 80mm high finished with tung oil

Hi :2tsup:Interesting piece, I like the colour and the tung oil sets it off. Having not turned a diverse range of timber what was it like to turn and how difficult was it to keep the original shape. Cheers Happy turning:U

nice work:2tsup: beatiful timber, we have some good buloke and sheoak down our way south east SA. Have done some work with buloke or bulloak seen it spelt both ways, really is a beautiful timber very hard to get in large pieces due to checking. For sure the hardest timber I have worked with, but polishes up a treat due to the high silica content.
Have carved a timber sculpture out of bulloak, got on exhibition in the Mount Gambier art gallery at the moment. will try attatching photo have'nt done before.

....and no wonder - I've just learnt that it's the current world record holder for hardness at about 22.5 Janka, ebony is about 20, gidgee 19, Spotted gum 11.

Great job. That would have been a white knuckle experience keeping it together with those holes!

Love it! Have turned a few bits of buloke. Never seen burl before. But I don't get out much. :rolleyes:

troy sorry mate, i only managed to save two small peices that might make one pen :doh: i really need to get a bowl saver for one off peices like this.:)
