This isn't finished yet, but this is what three days work looks like on it. This will be a fine addition to a really cool kitchen that I'm building. I should have it installed with pics towards the end of the month.

Right-ho Bat!!

Tell us all about the tambor door & how you got such a tall door to retract so neatly.

Looks REALLY good http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

The tambour is absolutely evil to make, because it is so time consuming. First, I glued formica thickness brushed aluminum to 1/4" (6mm) MDF with laminate glue. Then I cut that into 7/8" (22 mm) strips on the table saw. Then, setting the tablesaw blade at 10 degrees, ran all of the strips on both sides. Lightly sanded the rough edges, sprayed with primer, and then black spray paint. Then I put all of the edges against a straight edge, and then squared them up. I temporarily held them together with masking tape on the faces. I flipped all of the pieces onto their faces and glued them to a fabric backing with laminate glue. I then made a 3/4 (19mm) X 2" (51mm) piece and cut 1/4" tenons on it to fit into the track, rabbeted one long edge at 1/4" X 3/4" and applied aluminum to it, and attached it to the stack of tambour for the bottom piece.

The tambour is counterbalanced with a bungee cord system available through Hafele, and the dadoed in track is also Hafele. You can buy a plastic tambour that looks like metal, but it is crap. I did a bar last summer with plastic tambour doors, and the doors all came apart.

Here is a picture of the bar that the tambour doors fell apart on.
