Yesterday in Dandenong , I tried to buy a length of 50mm stuff for my camel back drill . I was quoted $180 for just over 4 metres of good quality belt. It is a lamination of a rubber compound between leather , 3 layers. I declined .
I noticed that Clark rubber sell 50mm rubber belting in various grades and thicknesses. eg 4, 6, 10 12 mm , this stuff is about 1/5 of the cost of the real thing . Mike
pipeclay 17th May 2012, 12:12 PM The rubber may work depending on the type it is,I would think it would need to be oil resistant.
Have you tried a Saddelry they may be able to provide a suitable sized piece of leather for use,if they can they would more than likely be able to join it together for you,have no idea of costs and it maybe similar to your allready quoted price.
Is the laminated belt an Industrial belt.

This might not be applicable to your particular requirement but a reasonable source of flat belting is used camshaft belts. They are toothed belts but can be turned over and run on the flat side. You should be able to get a supply from any car mechanic these days. They have a service life of 80,000 - 120,000K. The ones from my car are about 27mm wide but I think that some are wider than that.

shedhappens 17th May 2012, 05:33 PM Morrisman I got a new 2" wide flat belt for my old Hercus drill, it was about 3300mm long and cost 40 buck's, I could have bought a leather belt for it but they wanted 40 bucks per meter.

Hi Mike,
If you have the old belt I can help restoring it if it's leather. Coach-o-line was the preferred oil but cans of this stuff have been relegated to museum pieces. I have just used about a litre of belt dressing oil on a set of blacksmiths bellows and still can't believe how supple the leather is and they were pretty dry to start with. If you are going to Power Transmission services you wont be disappointed in the service. I have dealt with them since the 1970's when old Ron was selling out of the boot of his car. I think his son Rob may have taken over now. If they cant get it they will probably know who could. I must give Ron a call...
We can still get the belt dressing if you are interested. I am supposed to be getting some info for Bruce (Abratool) I think. Perhaps I should get onto it and do a thread as I also was supposed to get info on lacing a belt for Stuart. I have the pictures of how we do it at work, including the camel back. We also have a bit of belting too which I might be able to wangle some limited amounts of.

shedhappens 17th May 2012, 07:18 PM they had to get it in for me mike, it only took a day, wrap a tape around your pulleys and they will cut and fit the belt joiner for you.
from my not too good memory I deducted 10 mm for belt tension, if you think it needs to be tigther you can shorten it a bit.

I have to agree Bruce,
We have a considerable amount of leather belts that might come good with some TLC. It's almost a shame bullocks aren't as prolific as they used to be. Rubber on a camel back, pffft.
Mike, I will see what I can find and see if I can restore it for you if you have no luck at Power Transmission Services.

I was just thinking Mike, how short is the old leather belt, because you can get away with a bit of shortness if you lace it.
Don't get too discouraged at what it looks like as I was restricted by the lacing size. It should be smaller but still works well.

Retromilling 19th May 2012, 05:13 PM I have seen people just use v belts , the kind that are in many segments , you buy by the roll and you just make up your own length. I saw a guy running three v belts on a wide flat pully . seemed to work .
I think you can buy flat type segmented belts.
