Used a boring head during my apprenticeship in 1986 that bored square holes.
Was adjustable for size.
Never had a reason to use one since.

Hi,
Thanks for posting that, i've seen the same principal work in theory but never in practice. Your right though Bunny Lover, the noise is terrible, and it appears to be only in Al.

Where do you buy the square bolts and nuts to fit them??
I'll have to have a look at bunnies next time for square bolts?

Just make sure you ask one of the young kids that work there, then you can see how long it takes them to work it out........:D

While you are there, wander down to the cafe and ask for a black cappuccino. Gets them every time. :D

Or 4 sugars but don't stir it because I don't like it sweet.:D

There was a post on this last year and there is a link to a home made one in it.

Watts Bros. (still surviving) developed the square hole drill about 1917. There is a bit of information on why they work here:

Drilling a Square Hole (http://www.maa.org/mathtourist/mathtourist_08_31_09.html)

In the Dec/Jan 1992 issue of MEW there was an article describing the principle, and a description of making one, by one of their contributors. Would be an interesting exercise, but I'm not going to do it!

Frank.

Its also why you cant check if something is round by measuring it with a micrometer or the like.
