View Full Version : Steering gear cutters?

I'm trying to find a source who can make gears for a "quick rack" gear set for car power steering. Quaife and similar list them but will only do large orders.
Ideas or should I just give up on the project?
I'm quite keen on getting this done.

A few years ago, someone in the Bolwell car club in Vic had some quick pinions made to fit the Bolwell Nagari racks. The Nagari used a shortened Austin 1800 rack.
I'm not sure who made them but if you go to the the link I've included below there are contact details for the club committee. I'm sure that Ron McPherson or John Hartney would be able to give you some info. If you talk to either of them, just tell them that Bollie7 from Newcastle put you on to them.

Hi Ash,
What car? They are(or were) off the shelf items for many cars.

Volvo 240. TRW PS rack. No off the shelf suppliers (quaife want 25 min order).

Only option left seems to be a local gear cutter, using a different rack ($$$$ + a trip over the pits and other hassles) or giving up.
Hoping to get it form 3.5ish to 2.5ish lock to lock.

Emailed the car club, let's hope I can get some information :)

Thanks

Are the quaife ones you are talking about for PS? The only ones I came across weren't.
I guess it doesnt matter as you'd be a little while shifting the other 24. Though I was wondering why they said "not for PS"?

Good luck.

They only make them for one of the non PS racks. My guess is it's a rack with a lot of units in circulation but I doubt it's drivable on a road car with a quick set.
A few different racks were used during the many years of production.
I have the latest and lightest.

240 volvo hardly the epitome of sportiness, :D although I suppose Robbie Francevic would disagree!

You could try this bloke maybe,

Minetti Sports Car (http://www.minetti.com.au/)

to see if he has any local contacts. I know he bought up the stock of r&p I used on my car and I assume Geoff passed on the local maker details to him. Can't imagine a one-off being cheap in any event.

There is another person on the north shore here who brings in old volvo race bits, I know he sourced c/r gearsets for a 70s era box a little back and I can probably get his name in a day or two, as another possibility.
