Another top exhibition of work from many
talented woodturners.

I have attached a few pics ... some were winners
and some were probably a bit stiff to miss out.
More to follow .

Agree Allen, another great show and will be going back for another gander tomorrow. Dunno how the judges manage to whittle down the finalists from such a great bunch of work!
I'll attach a few photos too for those that can't get there

I heard today that someone from this board took out First overall in the novice category.

Won't name her in case she wants to remain anonymous.

As long as Tea Lady does not accept the Bankcard which still seems to be an acceptable method of payment I am sure she will do well for herself :)

Well done TL (A-M). You're first time?? You won't be in Novice section for much longer and I reckon you will advance to the Open in no time!

I'll be making the big trip down today to check it all out. Hope to catch up with a few forumites.

The flute looks good. Was it playable, or purely decorative?

A few more from today's visit. Sorry if I doubled up on any of the previous but couldn't be bothered looking back at what already had been uploaded.

I agree with TL, can't say I'm a fan of the really shiny look. Photo 77 is a lovely burl, really beautifully done but to me it looks like it's plastic due to the finish (nitro??). Dunno, personal taste I guess.

And just a couple more!

As a first timer, I only had one piece in the show but I'm all fired up to put a few in next year. I think I've got a handle on most of the categories but what constitutes a miniature? I've seen challenges on this forum where a piece has to fit inside a certain volume, are these competitions the same?

Os

Miniatures can only be a certain size, which from memory is a 50 mm cube. They have a small box which they place over the entry and if it doesn't fit inside it then it's ineligible.

Thanks Peter,

I'll have to put the thinking cap on to find something to suit my (not very high) skill level.

Yes thanks for posting the pics for those of us unable to attend ,wish I could have made it as I picked up a second with my hollow form and the cedar and paua shell platter I got third in the open section,I now find I could entered one of the lower classes but i had been told before by other organisations because I had been turning for so long I could only enter open any way four out of five got scored anyway and I am over the moon about it. Congratulations to all the other forum winners.

Cheers Tony:2tsup:

Here are some more photos that I took last Friday of items that caught my interest. Some are of Club members, some from forum members and some are of items that may guide me in developing my own style, hence it's an eclectic variety.

Hi Peter
Thanks for the extra pictures out of the 360 plus you got one of my pieces, the lattice top box, waiting now to see all the prize winners already looking at possible ideas for next year.
Cheers Tony

Tony,

That one caught my attention as at the recent Wood, Steel and Steam weekend organised by my club, Eastern Woodturners, I saw a demo by Cliff Walsh on how to do that kind of lattice work.

Something that I want to try out, hence my interest.

First off, congratulations to all the Forum members who won prizes.

They were well deserved. Special mention to Jim for taking out equal Best of Show.

Secondly. i attended the Exhibition on Sunday (someone had to take Big Head and his lovely wife:D) and I must say that I was impressed with the quality of work presented by all levels.

The standard has increased enormously in the past few years, however, the finish on some work still leaves a little to be desired.

Why spend all that time on making an object and then failing for the sake of an extra hours work to perfect the finish?

Some pieces only needed to be rubbed back with a very fine grit paper or steel wool and another coat applied and they would have been perfect, not 3rd rate.

Has anyone worked out why the crowbar/prybar is in a couple of the pictures (with the Rolling Pin)?

Has anyone worked out why the crowbar/prybar is in a couple of the pictures (with the Rolling Pin)? They use articles to decorate the tables. This year it was steel items.
