Does anyone know of a local producer, of handsaws? In still trying to get some value out of my $ I would prefer to buy local.
I have seen a lot of saws about but very few offer that age old quality to them.I remember my father,a cabinetmaker saying that one should never purchase a saw with less than 5 studs in the handle, and unfortunately I may have to go off shore to purchase anything of quality.
We're not fortunate in that we have access to the tool sales that are evident in the East of Oz and I have looked thru Auctions for some time now with no success.
Cheers and TIA http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif

A further note to say that I have located a saw brand which is English, I believe, that produce a five stud handled range of hand saws of reasonable quality being Spear & Jackson.
Anybody contemplating renewing their handsaws may consider looking at them for an option.

Hi guys,
on the very 1st day I went shopping for tools, about 16yrs ago (once upon a time) I bought a Wilkinson Sword(no, a saw not a sword) large, cross-cut type hand-saw- & what a beauty. I certainly got good value- about $30 I think. I've only sharpened it once! & it has always cut well- even in the garden! It is still in very good condition- no rust & handle still tight on blade.
Happy woodworking.

Hi Humidor, yeah Wilkinson are well noted for their approach to steel technology with intent to produce a fine steel product.
I guess it goes without saying that anybody that puts the effort and expertise into their basic needs is bound to produce a good ptoduct.
Which leads me on to say that I saw your previous post and the product you turn out is evident of a dedicated producer of fine woodwork.

Aren't Disson saws manufactured in SA.

There is an old tradesman in Bendigo who was taken to their factory as an apprentice and had the handle made to fit his hand.

What a great service. Wonder if it is still available?
