walab 7th July 2012, 01:10 AM Making a bookcase for my son. My first project, with a circular saw, ROS, a borrowed router and a few clamps.
1) Bringing the wood home - marri boards
2) First two boards joined - acceptable result
3) Cinder blocks keeping things flat
4) Routing attempt
5) Filling up saplines
6) Side panels prefinished (3 coats of danish oil wet sanded to 400)
7) Frame glued
8) Back panel joined and sanded (left over blackbutt floorboards)
9) More cinder blocks
10) Base/moulding routed and glued
walab 7th July 2012, 01:12 AM Lastly - one of the 'workshop' - such as it is!
walab 7th July 2012, 01:16 AM Forgot this one - the carcass dry fit
artme 8th July 2012, 10:14 PM Love that Marri, it makes for a good looking piece!!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:
One cute little boy could be displayed in that!

Claw Hama 16th July 2012, 01:25 AM Looking very nice, the finish will liven things up a bit.

walab 21st July 2012, 02:22 PM All finished and installed. 400 wet and dry then 3 coats of SO, finishing off with some more SO and 0000 steel wool. Truly blown away with the steel wool finish.
Ticky 21st July 2012, 07:51 PM Looks great,
When I say that, I don't mean it looks great for a first project, I mean, IT LOOKS GREAT.
The young bloke will get many years of use out of it & it may even inspir him to go out in the shed & help dad.
Well done.

Teguy 13th August 2012, 01:54 AM Looks awesome. Very inspirational for someone like me who is thinking about getting into woodworking at the moment. Cool workshop - with a disco ball!

walab 13th August 2012, 10:17 AM Thanks for all the support guys - James loves his bookcase - and has inspired me to move onto the next project - a jarrah hall table from a few jarrah door frames picked up from a skip bin 4 years ago and 'stored' in my veggie patch since. A quick pass with the circular saw along the face and some beautiful wood revealed beneath!
Christos 13th August 2012, 10:40 PM Are you going to do a work in progress for that one?
Nanigai 13th August 2012, 11:50 PM Nice bits of Marri Walab, and well stuck together.:2tsup:
Just shows you dont need all the fancy gear available to make nice looking bits of furniture.
Should last him for life:D

walab 14th August 2012, 11:35 AM Are you going to do a work in progress for that one?
That's the plan . . Heading o/s for a few weeks so will get stuck in when I get back - having a few issues deciding on the design for the legs - do i go big and chunky or fine and tapered . . then the eternal debate of whether I just sand everything 'flat' like with the bookcase or put it on hold until I can afford a thicknesser. Knowing me (and the acceptable yet tedious sanding on the bookcase) it will be more 40 grit and 2 sore shoulders!
Thanks again for the support all - James and I are having a heap of fun with the bookcase.
