A bloke from the Sunshine Coast advertised at our local club he had hardwood timber in 22 species for sale for woodturning, including my favourite Red Lancewood (Dead Finish), so I couldn't resist

Todd (SWINO) and I went up today to find a backyard full of logs, boards and blanks all over the place. We ended up buying Black Gidgee, Pink Gidgee, Budgeroo, Gutta Percha, Red Lancewood, Brown Lancewood, Rose Sheoak, Prickly Acacia, Brigalow and a few mystery pieces :2tsup:. Photo is what I kept (the timber is also behind what is shown). A few end checks, but hopefully the cracks won't extend too far :-

Now to work out where to put them here, my racks are overflowing already :U

Beatiful Neil,

That purple gidgee really stands out doesnt it.

I was up Nearby there myself also today at maplemans, got a bootfull of milled stuff.

Onto your haul though mate, how will you break it down? i'm guessing chainsawing it down till its bandsawable. And what size blade / tpi will ya use on the bandsaw?

I bought a 27mm 6tpi yesterday to try out on some gum i was given, i think i destroyed my 3/8 blade (bad practices and not too experienced on the bandsaw yet).

Neal.

:? No purple Gidgee in photo, all the Gidgee was relatively small, but he only had pink and black

You should have called in, it is only around the corner from Mapleman, and there was heaps. Although no Red Lancewood left

I have a decent bandsaw, so most of it is already at a size that can be handled, although I will use the chainsaw to shorten a few pieces up and the odd one in half. I also like turning bigger pieces

On the bandsaw I run a number of blades depending on what size I want to cut. Most of the time I am using a general 3/8" 3tpi skip blade. But for these larger lumps I intend using the 1" 2tpi blade to help keep the cuts straight.

6tpi is a bit fine for large stuff, good if you want a decent finish off the blade, not necessary for woodturning. It can also work the saw hard on hardwoods for big stuff, but would be good for the smaller stuff

Cheers
