This was cut from the same piece of Oregon and started as a square piece. Using hand planes she turned this into a round piece for the bottom half and the top half was planed down further to keep the square with rounded corners.
The transition between the round to square I think flows quite well.
The hangers were done on the lathe by me and attached to the pole by mortise and tenon.

The base was left square with feet turned on the lathe.
