Hi all,

I am wanting to make one of these:

They aren't for sale here anymore, as far as I can tell.

I want to make one by getting a wooden sphere and chiseling out the shape.
(Though make the concrete ones in pieces: http://davidfleishmandesigns.com/Images/spheres/bookstand_manufacturer.jpg )

I'd like one say a foot in diameter, to hold large size books.

Where can I get wooden spheres of that size, preferably in an easy to chisel wood?

(I'm in Melbourne)

Kind regards
Christian

I could do it. But why in one piece. Making two halves would eliminate the need for any chiseling.

Contact me at [email protected] if interested.

Oh lol. My mistake. I thought you had to get a whole ball to end up with two halves.

Very cool idea  - would be even better if I had room for it and time to read books :B

Hmm, yeah, good idea. Laminated then turned would make it look attractive.

You could even make it with a router & the right jig. Just calculate the pieces, glue up with paper in the joints, rout away everything that doesn't look spherical, then split it apart on the joints, finish & reglue permanently.

You could even make it with stripey laminations in a block, then proceed as above.

It is most certainly easier to turn half a sphere that a whole one.

Another alternative would be to make the item our of styrofoam and coat it with epoxy or wb enamel.

Large styro sphere are not hard to come by and ya'd hack it out with a knife in 1/2 an hour.
