I had a piece of Meranti which was left over from some shelves I built 40 years ago lying all this time under the house (waste not want not :U ) and I finally got around to using this by turning a small platter. Size is 185 * 40 mm. It is very light and has a lovely grain pattern.
It was prone to small tear outs and sanding did not get a smooth enough finish so I coated it with a thick mixture of shellac as a surface/grain filler prior to sanding, which gave a smooth, smooth finish prior to finishing with Shellawax. :2tsup:
Got a few more pieces for further platters.

Enjoy,
